I am a rising senior in high school, and I am currently planning on double majoring in a science and a non science (being premed). Colleges that do not have university wide general education requirements are looking pretttty attractive at this point; it will make my life a lot easier! I know that Amherst, Vassar, Hamilton, and Brown do not require these, though I also relinquish any thought of acceptance to the latter. haha I know Amherst is almost difficult, but I think I have a better shot. I have a 4.0 uw, rank= 5/250, 7 AP classes, 33 on ACT, state tennis, state choir, and some leadership positions. Are there any other schools around the caliber of Vassar that share this wonderful characteristic among other similarities?

Yes, Grinnell College-a top LAC located in Iowa about an hour from Des Moines and from Iowa City. Outstanding sciences facilities, huge endowment, generous merit aid, walk-on sports teams, incredibly engaged faculty, that wonderful unpretentious mid-western warmth, and…no distribution requirements.

I don’t think you should automatically dismiss schools that have Gen Ed req’ts.

If you come in with a good number of AP credits, then many/most/all of your Gen Ed req’ts may already be covered…so it could be a “non-issue”.

With 7 AP classes, that could mean that you’ll be coming in with about 40-45 credits…depending on which AP classes those are.

My kids have had to take very few Gen Ed classes (like maybe 2)…So, really no hassle for them at all.

If you’re a pre-med student, you’re going to have to take a bunch of courses that fulfill Gen Ed req’ts as well…Frosh Comp, Natural Science (Bio and chem classes), Calculus, etc.

Your post suggests that you’re going to have a double major…one in a science and one that is a non-science. If that’s true, then it’s VERY likely that some of the req’ts for the non science major will cover Gen Ed req’ts as well.

What will your majors be?
