What does she not like about New Paltz?

We haven’t visited New Paltz yet. I am forcing (bad mom!) her to apply there because it’s close, has a nice reputation and seems good in her major. We need her to apply to a SUNY because I’m in a shaky industry and I need, for my sanity, to feel that we have a good financial safety.

Mezzo’s mom, not knocking a thing you said. I agree that SUNYs are virtually unknown outside of the state and the circle of folks who went to them. That’s why there are so few out of staters there. They are also not as highly rated in the guides as many other state universities. I had my reservation about my son going to UB mainly because I did not have the information about the school that I did regarding his other choices, and getting anything from guidebooks and the such was limited.

Sk8mom, my son just graduated from UB. Any questions, head them this way. The school really was proactive with him. He would not have graduated in 4 years without their push.

I attended a SUNY and loved it then. It took me about 10 years before I realized I should have had a broader education and took myself back to school. I’ve always thought it was too bad NYS doesn’t have a real flagship in the rah rah sense but that is not the philosophy behind the SUNYs. In hindsight I probably should have applied to one of the Cornell state colleges.

I think New Paltz is a great little town with a nice vibe you don’t see in some other SUNY locations.

If zoosergirl is competitive I don’t think Barnard would hold her being local against her. There is a very large percentage of students from the metropolitan region. If finances are really tight they can even commute from home. There used to be a commuters lounge in the old MacIntosh and there probably will be one again in the Nexus (Diana). They also promote HEOP. Medieval and Renaissance Studies are Barnard strengths and you can’t beat the proximity to the best museums and other opportunites for study.

My son transferred to New Paltz. We all thought that NP was the only SUNY option due to size, location, major and overall feeling of the school. He could have gotten into any SUNY, but none of the others seemed to have what he was looking for like NP did. He didn’t want to have to fly anymore like at his previous school so he wanted to be a drive away and as a transfer the smaller size and sense of community was important. Unfortunately they don’t really have a the kind of orientation for transfers that they have for freshman. The freshman orientation at NP is amazing and the kids make so many good friends during it. It really sets them up for a great college experience.

Good luck with your college search zoosermom.

zooser,

If she hated Bing/Stonybrook, New Paltz might appeal to her. My D also HATED Bing/Stonybrook, but did like New Paltz, part of the like was her fav teacher in school was a New Paltz grad. PErsonally, I preferred New Paltz to Bing/Stonybrook. Surrounding areas of both were quite a downer, while New Paltz had a rather nice feel to the area.

You guys give great info! Thansk so much. D disliked the areas around Bing and SB, as well as the campus feel. I had heard that New Paltz was different and you’re all making me feel more optimistic. There has to be a list out there for everyone, right?

There are so many Sunys out there and they have their distinctive features. The problem is that they are mostly locally known other than the 4 unis and Geneseo. I know that Fredonia has some outstanding music programs, Purchase is nationally ranked in dance, music and theatre. But getting a lot of the information about each school is so difficult.

There is a SUNY application brochure that gives info about which Suny offers which programs and degrees that is helpful.

Although D got into all 3, Bing/Geneseo/New Paltz,(never applied to Stonybrook) Bing left the worst impression for her. Loved Geneseo and New Paltz environments. Check Geneso as well. Too far for us in the end. New Paltz and Geneseo admissions were much more responsive, Bing was horrendous to deal with overall from beginning to end.

Mine just absolutely won’t go far away from home. Most of the SUNYs are too remote, and Purchase isn’t a fit academically.

Zooser, has your D looked at SUNY Albany? I realize it’s large and one of the less popular NY schools, but its classics and especially archaeology offerings are reasonably good. Stuart Swiny in anthro is extraordinarily knowledgeable and well-connected. They even lured Peter Lacovara from Emory to teach for a year, and one professor is teaching Sumerian in the fall.

Hunter is the best NY public for classics.

Archaeologist, we hadn’t looked at Albany, but will do so now. Thanks for the tip.

Hunter would be great, especially if she got into Macauley, but the little beast doesn’t want to commute. I’m hoping that we can buy her a clue and an attitude adjustment this summer.

Is Bard close enough? I know a marvelous Classics professor at Bard…he adores his students. Obviously it’s expensive, but they may come through with excellent fin aid.

Bard is too rural and too crunchy. She wouldn’t be a personal fit there.

Although she adored the last book by Daniel Mendelsohn.

Zooser, Hunters honor students are eligible for limited dorm space

The Brookdale Dorm is located in New York City’s Kips Bay/Gramercy Park area on 25th St. between 1st Ave and FDR Drive.

That is a hefty walk or bus to the school, but the honors students get a great financial deal – imho.

D friend goes to Hunter in Macauley, if we knew then what what we know now and what her friend is getting offered to her, even as a rising soph this summer, would have seriously looked deeper at it.

Zoose
Queens College is opening up a residence hall in the fall. That may be enough of an incentive to check out Queens college.

seems they have a classics major too-

Loved this conversation. Will be interested if more develops in this thread.

My D is a hs jr. She has interest in dance and Fredonia and Brockport surfaced. We live in northeast OH. The weather is not an issue. We like the price even for out of state. But notice someone mentioned that the oos costs will be rising. Understandable due to the economy and NY state’s tax income problems. Will keep watching to see where things will be in 2 yrs.

I guess a visit to Albany makes sense…but I have to pipe in and say that the campus is very unattractive (especially in the winter, when both the buildings and the sky are gray). It’s also big and impersonal…and the food is horrendous.

Swing by New Paltz…a much nicer place. The town is bustling and the surrounding area is gorgeous. If I had to choose a SUNY, and they had my major, NP would be the one.

I would definitey put NP ahead of Albany. Albany is very close to crime areas, and if kids move off campus it is a concern (and I work in NYC every day!!)
