I am currently living in the United States under adjustment of status (AOS). This means that I can legally live here until my application for permanent residency is either approved or denied, and I don’t need a valid visa. I know that I will not get my green card for another 3 years atleast. On the common app, there is no place for my case. What do I put as my citizenship status? Do I just pick “I currently do not have a valid U.S. visa” and explain my case in additional information?
The country that you came from. You could put down “I-485 pending” in the additional information, so that the school knows that you don’t require student visa or form i-20.
You have to put down whatever visa you’re currently on. I’m guessing you’re on an H4 visa or something similar. Then, in your additional information section, you can elaborate and tell colleges that you’re in the process of receiving a green card.
Hi,
My daughter is in the same situation. We do not have any Visa. She got EAD and AP. what should we choose in common app? I think she will be considered international student for admission.
@katsar2001 How can she get an EAD without a visa? Does she have a pending asylum petition? Did her visa expire? You should elaborate a bit.
She got the EAD based on the Pending I-485 Application. She applied for SSN and got it based on EAD approval. In the common app she put the details in additional informataion and selected other Visa Type for Visa question. Actually I called UC Admission Office and they asked to select other and put more details at the end of the application process. Once admitted they will request more details.
I am actually in a similar situation and many programs, especially bs/md programs require applicants to be citizens or Permanent residents. Can I be still considered for these programs if I put other as my citizenship status on Common App? should I contact the schools im applying to?
Can I know what was solution? Did she get FInancial OR Merit Based Federal AId?
