No second language hurts?

im taking french now and quite frankly its my lowest mark and im considering not taking it in grades 11 and 12. I can speak the language, but in terms of coursework and written exams I have much trouble.

My overall average will continually be lower, I know, if i keep going with the course. So should I drop in my last two years?

If not, how can i show proficiency in the language without taking the course through my school?

And to all those who say "keep with it," no thanks.

Essentially, Im trying to understand how much not taking a second language in grades 10 and 11 will count against me.

The rest of my courseload is heavy and filled with APs.

i took french 8-9-10 and then hated the teacher and didn’t take it 11 and 12 and was accepted

^ way to bust that myth!

Conventional wisdom is that you need to take a language all four years for the super elite colleges and many of the elite ones. Regardless of individual cases like mythbuster, I trust the conventional wisdom on this one. You need to know you are taking a calculated risk. However, a higher GPA with only two years of a language could benefit you for many other schools.

What about switching to a different language? Taking a language class online vs. at your school? Taking it at a community college with a different teacher? If you do not take a language and are aiming for elite colleges, you must replace the language with another academic class or you are doubly shooting yourself in the foot.

Frankly, I doubt you are proficient in French if you have only taken it during middle school and grades 9 and 10, so it will be tough to show proficiency.
