What would Thomas Jefferson think?
ESPN - ESPN The Magazine

It was announced a few weeks ago. I believe The Cav Daily covered it, but I can't find the article. Here's one from the city paper:

Cavs ban all signs at games | Charlottesville Daily Progress

It's too bad...I really enjoy seeing some of the clever signs that are made for games. Not all of them are clever, of course, but many are.

I understand that LEGALLY they can ban signs, but what's the point?

Hopefully they won't ban orange togas...

UVa athletic fans will have to leave their signs at home this year. Officials say they're eliminating all signs to promote and support sportsmanship on game day.

This decision comes after a UVa student held up a sign that read “Fire Groh” at a football game last year.

Now officials want to make sure nothing like that happens again, even if fans believe it may infringe on their first amendment rights.

I don't see the big deal. They wrote it on Beta Bridge too. Are they gonna remove the bridge or ban painting it? Most likely not. This is so dumb.

Me too....

Dude. What is this world coming to?

They gonna ban the wave next? What about freedom of speech?

Freedom of speech doesn't matter in respect to athletes' (and their coaches') egos.

you know, I kind of like this no signs rule. I don't have to worry about not being able to see. Has anyone ever had to sit behind someone with a sign? It's ridiculous. And I'm all for 1st amendment rights, but when it's blocking my view, that's another story.

Cavalier Daily

Thanks to this article anyway, I ended up googling Sally Hemmings and her entire family tree. It's funny how Betty Hemings (Sally Heming's mother) ends up having a larger biography than TJ's mother.

Someone fill us in on what this was all about:

All: As many of you have heard, the Athletic Department recently instituted a sign prohibition for all athletic events. This announcement has recently garnered national attention portraying U.Va. in a very negative light. Many are outraged.

We ask that you be a part of the solution:
If you would like to take civic action as a student by demonstrating your disapproval in regards to the Athletic Department’s new sign policy, please stop by the following locations prior to Saturday’s game against Richmond. Distribution and instruction will occur in the following areas…
Old dorms: Bonnycastle, Echols and Dabney
New dorms: Cauthen, Woody, and Tuttle
27 West lawn 41 West lawn 49 West lawn 51 West lawn

Somebody came up with a creative way to convey a message.
NBC29-UVA Students Protest New Sign Policy

Basically, the athletic department is a bunch of tools. Actions like this directly conflict with the foundation of this institution and is an incredible hit behind the knees of the students. It's not only the athletic department either. Other offices have similar problems where you have professionals that are not in tune with what it means to be at UVa and what honor and student self governance stands for.

I enjoyed sneaking in dozens of sheets of paper to distribute to my friends and fellow students.
