My FAFSA application was flagged for confirmation or something so that i have to send in my dad's taxes to receive any financial aid. The problem is, my dad didnt pay his taxes. So i was wondering if there was a way for me to still receive my financial aid by calling in or sending in his W-2 forms. Also, on my application i put that i received no sort of income, but the confirmation thing also asks me to send in my tax reports even though i didnt make any money. any help would be appreciated

It’s not too late for your dad to file his income tax return for 2008.

There’s usually an additional form that you fill out with your verification. This is where you put any explanations. For your own taxes, put “will not file” and the reason. I don’t know what you send for our dad or if that will hold up your aid, you should probably call the FA office.

Failing to pay one’s taxes when one is required to do so is a federal crime. (That’s how they got Al Capone - for tax evasion, not murder.) Since both FAFSA and the tax laws are administered by federal agencies, it is likely that they communicate with each other. In fact, it may be possible that your application was flagged for verification because the IRS has no record of your father’s tax return.

Your father could have much bigger problems than your financial aid.

Chevda, I think OP means her dad didn’t file yet - if he has W-2’s, then he’s probably paid through the normal deductions. Those who filed for an extension still have the clock ticking.

I believe the school will not disperse aid until the student’s parents’ tax return situation is resolved. They need to file, and pay…or apply for an extension.

Why hasn’t the parent paid taxes? Is it that they didn’t need to file or that they didn’t file and need to…or that they filed but haven’t paid the bill.

As noted above…if the family owes the government money…it is unlikely that the government is going to GIVE the family more money until they pay up what they owe.

It’s a little late to file for an extension now. But it’s not too late to file the return.

Speaking as a financial aid officer … my first question is why has he not filed? All conversation that follows hinges on the answer to this question. If you can answer this question, I can answer YOUR question.

As for YOU not filing taxes … look at the info sent to you. Does it tell you what to do if you are a non taxfiler? It should. If not, go to the school’s financial aid website, where you should find info. If you don’t find it, call & ask. We require a non taxfiler form if you were not required to file. Of course, if you WERE required to file, that’s a different story …
