No wonder the football team is doing well!

Maybe they're all going pro after their junior year.

Could be! But I think this NCAA release is related to the 1996-1999 entering cohort, and not the current group of worthies!

byerly, shouldnt you be more worried about the harvard football criminals..i mean crimson?

They will all graduate, and probably get good jobs at good wages after grad school; and

Like Cal, the Harvard football team is ranked higher than Stanford!

I'd be willing to bet that Harvard would crush stanford on the football field, even though half the harvard players have been kicked off the team/arrested.

sorry, but as bad as stanford is currently, a div 1-aa team like harvard will NOT beat them. you are misinterpreting those computer rankings; stanford is still a pac-10, div1-a school.

I'm not "misinterptreting" the rankings at all.

Obviously it is early in the season and the numbers can bounce around, but my guess is that Harvard will be rising and Stanford will not.

you should be so proud

Indeed! And all this without relying on salaried players, while Stanford has the nation's highest football payroll outside on the NFL!

"sorry, but as bad as stanford is currently, a div 1-aa team like harvard will NOT beat them."

UC Davis?

Portland State?

The Div 1AA University of New Hampshire manhandled Northwestern ealier this year.

Who did Portland State beat, cause it certainly wasn't Cal.

He is referring to San Jose state.

"I'm not "misinterptreting" the rankings at all.

Obviously it is early in the season and the numbers can bounce around, but my guess is that Harvard will be rising and Stanford will not."

Well, my guess, because I actually watch Jeff Sagarin's rankings, and am not j ust trying to make smart ass remarks on a message board, is that Stanford will rise.

Strength of schedule is a key component to those rankings. Stanford is starting Pac-10 play, a conference including the likes of USC, Cal, and Oregon (all top 25 teams). Even mid to low level Pac10 teams (UCLA, ASU, WashSt., etc.) will give Stanford a boost in that category in comparison with teams Harvard will be facing. Tell me, which one is at an advantage in SOS - a team facing off against the Pac 10 or a team facing off against the vaunted Ivy League?

Also, margin of victory is used in the beginning of the season for Sagarin's rankings. Harvard has benefited from playing cupcakes like Holy Cross and Brown. Stanford on the other hand has had to play AT Oregon, and against Wash St. and Navy.

Yes, they did lose to San Jose St and Davis last year. Yes, those are Div 1-AA teams. BUT, San Jose St. and Davis both have California as a recruiting base (read: very, very good thing) and those schools don't have anywhere close to the stringent admission requirements of Harvard (not to mention the fact Harvard doesn't offer atheltic scholarships). The result: San Jose St. and Davis, although Div 1-AA, still have better football programs.

SJSU plays in the WAC, I thought, so Div IA.

oops...right you are...so that loss doesn't look as bad as i thought

Two years ago, Harvard finished the season ranking higher than Stanford in the Sagarin rankings, and that year Stanford wasn't even winless.

stanford doesnt get the opportunity to play such powerhouses as columbia

You should check to see how the Sagarin rankings are compiled. Strength of schedule is taken into account. Note that Sagarin has Cal higher than any of the current polls.

Harvard always loses to Stanford when it comes to sports. Their football will lose BIG to Stanford just like their tennis/water polo...etc always did in the past. Few years ago, Harvard beat every other Ivy by huge margin but was then BLANKED by Stanford. Their "impressive" wins against other Ivies got them ranked 16th. But Stanford had an easier time to beat them than some other unranked Pac-10 teams. I am sure the same applies to football. LOL!
