nomination=confusion

Hi everybody. I had recieved my nomination to USNA back in November, but I'm now a little confused. On my congressman's website, it says that each academy will pick one to attend the fall 2008 semester. So basically, if someone else that also got a nomination in the USNA catagory and got appointed, then my shots are pretty much over or what? Correct me if I'm wrong, please!!

*Posted this on serviceacademyforums but I wanted a broad view.

If you don't get appointed from your congressman's slate (and that's your only nom) then you'll enter the national pool, where you'll compete with candidates from all over the nation. I think someone posted on another thread that the academy allots about 150 appointments from the national pool.

pknguyen44,

You got a nom and that is the most important thing. Your MOC most likely handed in a slate of 10, it is a feather in your cap, be proud.

It is not over, you can be placed in the national pool.

If you know someone personally who said that their appt letter stated it came from your nom, without an LOA, than somebody else can answer the question better than me. If they have an LOA all they needed was a nom to get an appt.

Theoretically the MOC has 10 noms, lets say 9 of them have a pres. the SA can apply 9 to pres and give you the appt under your MOC. That is theoretical, not likely to happen, but could, since I think you said you are from CO Springs. You might not have heard yet, because the other candidates without LOA have not submitted their paperwork. If they haven't the SA cannot give out the appt. They need to wait untill all of your peers paperwork is complete or to the deadline (remember many candidates chose not to complete their application, thus the deadline is when they say okay letes move on). Do you have only 1 MOC, if so...you need to remember only 1 is needed.

Many of the people getting their appts right now have varying factors. Call your BGO and ask him directly. He/She has the ability to give you the most important information. I have read through threads that some candidates have already been told they are in the national pool...I would think that means the MOCs have been charged to other people, but they still want them. It is too early to worry 90% of candidates do not hear until Mar. It isn't easy, but unless another college is forcing you to answer now all you can do is wait. Call or email your BGO, he can help a lot more than we can. We can give you the variables, but he can give you the real answer and direction

Keep in mind that getting a NAPS or Foundation offer does not require a nom. This would be key to someone who had a nom but wasn't the slate winner and wasn't competitive in the national pool. What I'm saying is...if your application isn't finished when you find out someone else got accepted from your slate, don't give up...still finish the application otherwise you definitely won't get in. And if you plan to reapply from college, it will be better to have a completed application on the books.

Thanks for the response everybody..di, I am in college now and NAPS would definately be something I would take if offered..I wouldn't mind sacrificing another year to become successful at the academy..

This doesnt make any sense to me. There are only 435 congressman and 100 senators. So is thats 535 slots? Plus the 150 slots from the national pool so thats only 685? Where do the other half of the appointments come from.

BTW I got a nom from my senator today.

Congrats on your nom!!!!

Here is what you need to add into the equation:

MOC's can have 5 at any given time, so thus some years they will have 2 .
100 Presidential slots
5 VP slots (at any given time)
International
50 for Supe
65 KIA/MIA (at any given time)
85 (I think, for enlisted)

I know I am missing other factors, and I am positive my numbers are off, Ann is the one that can LINK the thread for what the exact numbers and cats are, but at least this gives an idea of where the others come from

170 for Enlisted
~543 for Representatives (1.25 per year)
~125 for Senators (1.25 per year)
50 for the Supe
~1 for the VP
100 for the President
~16 KIA/MIA (65 at any one time over 4 years)
Unlimited for Children of Medal of Honor Recipients
20 for NROTC, JNROTC, MCJROTC
~ 1025 appointments from theses sources - The rest will be from the national pool

thanks prof...I knew my numbers were off, but at least I wasn't that far off except for the enlisted...quick question what about NAPS, what cat do they fall into?

NAPsters are encouraged to apply for nominations from their MOCs. If they are unsuccessful, NAPS/USNA admin help them apply for one of the limited number of nom's available from the Secretary of the Navy.
