Heard alot about LOA's w/o nominations. How about the reverse ? Are there alot of instances where someone gets a nomination but not an LOA ?

I don’t think you quite understand the LOA. It is a ‘guarantee’ of acceptance for highly desirable top quality candidates. The Academy acceptance process and the nomination are two completely separate processes. And because of this, yes, one can end up with either and not the other. Every year there even seem to be a few who received nominations and did not know that they had to apply to the Academy for appointments. Much more common, around 4000, off the top of my head, receive nominations. Roughly 2000 are 3qed and 1500 are offered appointments. So the most common is a nomination and no appointment.
