Non-academic question...access to civilization??

Yes- I agree- the Chancellor was, shall we say, a liitle long winded!
I was in awe of these students, particularly the one you mentioned. The two young men who won the awards at the Phi Beta Kappa ceremony also were amazing. And this is just a sample of those who graduated that day, not to mention those to come. I was honored to be there. Because of my daughters strange college journey we paid for her her entire Vanderbilt education out of pocket- this was by no means planned, but as I have said before
i do not regret one penny we have spent, even though we are driving our 9 year old cars, living in our very modest house & have been deeply affected by the economic downturn here in CA. Attending graduation truly validated my husband’s and my feelings, i am hopeful for our future from what I witnessed that day!
Not to mention just the accomplishments but the fun they all had while they did it!!! I’m jealous!

Your parent reports are very inspiring and affirming for those of us with Class of 2013 students. Thank-you miasmom and 2VU0609! 2VU0609: With two Vandy grads, saying goodbye is really saying “hello” to many great family alum gatherings in Nashville.

And miasmom’s daughter should inspire those on the waitlist since we all recognize that many on the waitlist are kids who would thrive greatly at Vandy…the stats for admission this year were truly daunting and it is obvious that miasmom’s daughter was always meant to be a Commodore! So good luck to all the talented kids on the waitlist, too.

Faline2-
Thanks for your kind comments-
Yes- there are many, many students who would thrive at Vanderbilt but are not accepted-
I don’t think they defer ED students anymore- that was the worst- because your heart is still with Vandy and then you have to apply elsewhere. My daughter was awarded several full scholarships but chose Tulane because it was, like Vandy, a small private university in an urban environment. It was a very expensive choice- because she chose not to go back to Tulane she lost all her academic scholarship money. Live and learn!

Graduation was wonderful, though I was also so disappointed that it was not held outdoors. I guess they couldn’t help but move it inside with such changeable and threatening weather. Thursday night was gorgeous and I joked to my son that they should send out a text to everyone saying “Graduation, Alumni Lawn, NOW!” The founders medal award winners were amazing students, but the thing about Vanderbilt students is that they are seem like such great kids, all with bright futures (even if those futures are not quite clear for everyone at this moment.) Congratulations to all the graduates and their parents!
