<p>In keeping with some of the recent threads, it would be wonderful if some of the more experienced students and parents could come up with a list of non-audition BFA Drama/Theater programs for us Class of 2012'ers. They are very hard to find. URI is one. Are there others??</p>

<p>There are also several BA programs that allow an audition after one or two years into a BFA option. Schools I know of with this option are:</p>

<p>Holy cow! You guys are great-like a walking encyclopedia of theater knowledge. This is my second go round with admissions and the first was completely different than the second. Thank you so much for the suggestions.</p>
<p>Just a word of caution for those programs that audition for their BFA program during Freshman or Sophomore year - find out how many kids are admitted to their BFA program and what are their options if they are not admitted? Also realize it makes for a somewhat more stressful college experience until admission to the BFA program is determined. Please determine how all that plays out with your child.</p>
<p>Northwestern has the MT program auditions at the end of Freshman or Sophomore year and while we had a positive outcome it was a bit more of a stress from about February until June when she was admitted. I seem to remember another parent on CC whose child was incredibly distraught until she was admitted. The plus to Freshman or Sophomore auditions is that the professors and administrators know each student a lot better than a 10 minute audition would allow so interest, attitude, potential, etc. are more evident.</p>
<p>Yes - we have now lumped completely non-audition with “later audition” BFAs. They are very different. If someone is smart with commands on this site, maybe they can boldface the completely non-audition BFAs on the list. </p>

<p>Isn’t it lovely to see all of these wonderful programs? We all understand the benefits and attractions of an auditioned program (and the downsides, admissions-wise) but I do feel that a kid who wants to study at the BFA level of intensity deserves the opportunity regardless of their ability to impress schools while they’re still in HS. To have a non-auditioned, safety BFA on my D’s list was a wonderful relief, and I’m glad so many schools still offer this option.</p>
<p>Another comment about the BA-to-BFA system: This could be a very good choice for a student who isn’t sure what s/he wants upon starting college, and wants lots of options. We felt that being able to decide later in his/her college career, with the benefit of college advising, and with the option to stay in the BA if that were preferable, all seemed like a very helpful and healthy situation.</p>
<p>As I was putting the list together, I visited all of these websites to confirm that they still offer a non-audition BFA (slow day at work ;)) It was fun to read through and see the opportunities available at these schools. I am with EmmyBet - that non-audition safety school you would love to attend is so important to have on your list!</p>

Both, I believe, have auditions during freshman or sophomore year.</p>
<p>I think only Musical Theater is a BFA program at UCI. Otherwise, the department offers BA degrees.</p>
<p>American University (Washington, DC) has a slightly different system: students may audition in advance, but are not required to until they are enrolled and ready to declare a major. Students must undergo the standard admissions process, and then arrange to audition for the theater department. American awards a B.A. in Theater, instead of a B.F.A.They encourage prospective theater majors to audition as early as possible.</p>
