Non-audition BFA's

In keeping with some of the recent threads, it would be wonderful if some of the more experienced students and parents could come up with a list of non-audition BFA Drama/Theater programs for us Class of 2012'ers. They are very hard to find. URI is one. Are there others??

Thanks.

snapdragonfly mentioned one in Texas. I don’t remember the school, and I haven’t seen her post for a while. Maybe you can PM her.

There are also several BA programs that allow an audition after one or two years into a BFA option. Schools I know of with this option are:

Hofstra
Columbia College Chicago
UW-Milwaukee

Maybe people can add to this list, too.

Here are a few. The only real personal knowledge I have of any of these programs is Southwestern in Georgetown. My D has friends who attend and I have seen numerous productions there and they are always very well done.

Southwestern University - Georgetown, TX (Theatre BFA - Acting & Directing)
Wichita State University - Wichita, KS (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performing Arts: Theatre Performance Concentration)
Marshall University - Huntington, WV (BFA Theatre w/ Performance emphasis)
North Dakota State University - Fargo, ND (BFA in Theatre Arts w/ Perfromance emphasis)
Ohio University - Athens, OH (BFA Theatre Performance Program) *audition during freshman year
Stephens College - Columbia, MO (BFA Theatre Arts Acting emphasis)
Texas Tech University - Lubbock, TX (BFA Theatre Arts w/Acting concentration) *audition in sophomore year
Tulane University - New Orleans, LA (BFA Acting) *audition in sophomore year
University of Montana - Missoula, MT (BFA Acting)

Wow, austinmom, you are the greatest! Here is a new list, that includes everything. We’ll keep the asterisks for programs that have auditions after 1-2 years. We can check if you can stay in the BA at all of these schools if not accepted into the BFA - I know at the 3 I mentioned above you can. I’ve alphabetized them, too:

Hofstra University - Hempstead, NY (BFA Performance or Production) *audition fall of sophomore year
Marshall University - Huntington, WV (BFA Theatre w/ Performance emphasis)
North Dakota State University - Fargo, ND (BFA in Theatre Arts w/ Perfomance emphasis)
Ohio University - Athens, OH (BFA Theatre Performance Program) *audition during freshman year
Southwestern University - Georgetown, TX (Theatre BFA - Acting & Directing)
Stephens College - Columbia, MO (BFA Theatre Arts Acting emphasis)
Texas Tech University - Lubbock, TX (BFA Theatre Arts w/Acting concentration) *audition in sophomore year
Tulane University - New Orleans, LA (BFA Acting) *audition in sophomore year
University of Montana - Missoula, MT (BFA Acting)
University of Rhode Island - Kingston, RI (BFA in Acting, Directing, Design and Technology, Stage and Theatre Management, Musical Theatre (major in Acting; minor in vocal performance))
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee - (BFA Acting, Costume Production, and Technical Production) *audition after completing gen eds and intro theatre courses (1-2 years)
Wichita State University - Wichita, KS (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performing Arts: Theatre Performance Concentration)

Holy cow! You guys are great-like a walking encyclopedia of theater knowledge. This is my second go round with admissions and the first was completely different than the second. Thank you so much for the suggestions.

Just a word of caution for those programs that audition for their BFA program during Freshman or Sophomore year - find out how many kids are admitted to their BFA program and what are their options if they are not admitted? Also realize it makes for a somewhat more stressful college experience until admission to the BFA program is determined. Please determine how all that plays out with your child.

Northwestern has the MT program auditions at the end of Freshman or Sophomore year and while we had a positive outcome it was a bit more of a stress from about February until June when she was admitted. I seem to remember another parent on CC whose child was incredibly distraught until she was admitted. The plus to Freshman or Sophomore auditions is that the professors and administrators know each student a lot better than a 10 minute audition would allow so interest, attitude, potential, etc. are more evident.

Yes - we have now lumped completely non-audition with “later audition” BFAs. They are very different. If someone is smart with commands on this site, maybe they can boldface the completely non-audition BFAs on the list.

Also please add at the beginning:

Columbia College - Chicago, IL (BFA in Acting, Directing, Theatre Design, Musical Theatre, and Playwriting) *audition after completion of 45 credits

My D did not end up applying to any of the BA-to-BFA schools after all, for a variety of reasons, and I think the idea of having to audition again was one thing that didn’t appeal to her.

Columbia College - Chicago, IL (BFA in Acting, Directing, Theatre Design, Musical Theatre, and Playwriting) *audition after completion of 45 credits

Hofstra University - Hempstead, NY (BFA Performance or Production) *audition fall of sophomore year

Marshall University - Huntington, WV (BFA Theatre w/ Performance emphasis)

North Dakota State University - Fargo, ND (BFA in Theatre Arts w/ Perfomance emphasis)

Hats off to you again, austinmom!

Isn’t it lovely to see all of these wonderful programs? We all understand the benefits and attractions of an auditioned program (and the downsides, admissions-wise) but I do feel that a kid who wants to study at the BFA level of intensity deserves the opportunity regardless of their ability to impress schools while they’re still in HS. To have a non-auditioned, safety BFA on my D’s list was a wonderful relief, and I’m glad so many schools still offer this option.

Another comment about the BA-to-BFA system: This could be a very good choice for a student who isn’t sure what s/he wants upon starting college, and wants lots of options. We felt that being able to decide later in his/her college career, with the benefit of college advising, and with the option to stay in the BA if that were preferable, all seemed like a very helpful and healthy situation.

As I was putting the list together, I visited all of these websites to confirm that they still offer a non-audition BFA (slow day at work ;)) It was fun to read through and see the opportunities available at these schools. I am with EmmyBet - that non-audition safety school you would love to attend is so important to have on your list!

Bump.

Add to list of BA-to-BFA programs:
Ohio University (BFA Theater Performance; also BA Theater, BFA Playwriting, BFA Stage Management, and BFA Production Design and Technology)
University of California- Santa Barbara (BFA Theater, Acting emphasis; also BA Theater with concentrations in Design, Directing, Playwriting, Theater & Community, and Theatre & Performance Studies)
University of North Carolina- Greensboro (BFA Acting; also BFA Design and Theater Technology, BFA Technical Production, BFA Theater Education, and BA Drama)

Minor correction StrangeBro - the U of NC - Greensboro has auditions at the end of Freshman year for the BFA Acting program.

^Correct, that’s what I was trying to say. You declare a Drama major and then audition at the end of the year.

Oh, right, I just re-ready your post, sorry.

University of Madison-Wisconsin
University of California-Irvine
Both, I believe, have auditions during freshman or sophomore year.

I think only Musical Theater is a BFA program at UCI. Otherwise, the department offers BA degrees.

American University (Washington, DC) has a slightly different system: students may audition in advance, but are not required to until they are enrolled and ready to declare a major. Students must undergo the standard admissions process, and then arrange to audition for the theater department. American awards a B.A. in Theater, instead of a B.F.A.They encourage prospective theater majors to audition as early as possible.

Austin Mom- how is U of Texas at Austin for drama? do they offer a Bachelors level in Acting? How “texas” does it feel? (we wouldn’t consider other parts of texas but hear Austin is a little blue dot…) thanks

Marshall University - Huntington, WV (BFA Theatre w/ Performance emphasis)

Nebraska Wesleyan - Lincoln, NE (BFA Acting)

North Dakota State University - Fargo, ND (BFA in Theatre Arts w/ Perfomance emphasis)

Ohio University - Athens, OH (BFA Theatre Performance Program) *audition during freshman year
