You may want to look through all the information on this website regarding summer intensives. This is a fabulous resource for dancers. While the information is geared more towards ballet, they do have information regarding modern and contemporary programs as well!

Notmamarose-I would say humidity but for a teenager that would not be a problem. Thanks. I keep debating alvin Aliey because she has no modern - ballet, jazz and team. What do you think?
Capeme- I have been plowing through ballet talk for days now, not too much on jazz but here and there.

So here is where we are at:
Audition for Joffrey J&C next weekend
The Rock Considering audition out of state (mostly interested in jazz)
Allonso Lines audition here
NYCDA video audition
Steps - maybe video audition but no housing
CPYB - not that thrilled but will probably apply since it is just an application and photos
Cary ballet- 5 day jazz intensive
ABT -unlikely to get in but may do out of state audition or video audition

Other possibilities
Dance Theatre of Harlem
Alvin Ailey
Broadway Dance Center
The Edge

Ok, what did I miss or forget that we should add to the list.

Since your daughter is focusing on improving her technique, CPYB might be a good place for her. However, they place by ability and not by age, and she could very well end up in a class with much younger students. If this were to happen how would she feel about it? She could learn a great deal, but might not have the most fun. But this might be the best place to improve her ballet foundation.

You asked about LINES–my daughter has been accepted to their summer program several times and was set to attend but was injured. It is a very unusual audition–your daughter might like is since it is less about technique (although they teach technique very, very well) and more about expression. The summer program challenges the dancers on many levels and most report that it is “life changing”. If your daughter likes their approach, and is accepted, I highly recommend it. But it is competitive.

If you like contemporary, and San Francisco, I would also recommend San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. They have a contemporary focus, and Summer Lee Radigan is an excellent and beloved teacher. Friends of my daughter who have attended this program have improved greatly, and have had a great time. If they do not audition in your area they accept videotape.

If she is not confident of her technique but still wants ballet, some options might be the less frequently mentioned programs such as Kansas City Ballet or Ballet West. Both have excellent reputations for improving dancers during summers, and have housing.

Quill thank you for the detailed information. LInes sounds like an amazing program and DD is going to audition; though she is probably not strong enough in ballet to qualify it sounds like the audition itself will be worthwhile

We have pretty much eliminated CPYB. To answer your question she does not mind being with younger kids it is just some of the reviews by older non advanced kids gave us pause and also the geographic area leaves a lot to be desired.

We love San Fran and so we will look into San Fran Conservatory of Dance. Also, Ballet West and Kansas City.

We are also looking at some University programs. If anyone has any suggestions for those, we would appreciate them. So far we are looking at World Dance at UCLA, U of Michigan, and Rutgers U.

The Joffrey J&C audition is today. So I am off to wake DD.

Sewing mom, The Ballet West SI is located on the University of Utah campus, and some of the university faculty teach as well as Ballet West staff and guest teachers. College students can receive college credit. In the past, SI students who would be high school seniors were auditioned at the SI and received indication whether they were accepted to the U of Utah Department of Ballet (pending university acceptance.)
Good luck to your daughter, let us know how things turn out for her.

Thank you. I will keep everyone posted. We should here from Joffrey in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time we are organizing what we need to apply to some of the other SIs mentioned.

DD was excepted to all 4 Joffrey Jazz SI’s. She is out of town and will return today, so she can start sorting out which one she wants to go to. Thanks everyone for all the help with this process.

Hi, I know this thread was from over 2 years ago but I’m courious on how your DD did at the LINES audition? I feel as if I’m on the same boat as she was, but I’ve been wanting to audition for a while now. Can you give me any feed back on the audition and how she felt about it? @sewingmom
