Non French Quater Restaurents Recommendations Appreciated

Would love some recommendations for good restaurants/ cheap eats/ and funky places located relatively near Tulane (and beyond). Primarily interested in non French Quarter places but would be open to any favorite (non touristy) places you might recommend there as well.

Thanks so much!

Jacques Imo’s.

Cochon [Cochon Restaurant](http://www.cochonrestaurant.com/)

NOLA (but it’s on the edge of the quarter) [Restaurants : NOLA Restaurant | emerils.com](NOLA - Emeril's Restaurants)

Neither is that cheap but both are fantastic

For cheap and fantastic try :

New Olreans food:
Mothers http://www.mothersrestaurant.net/
Franky and Johnny’s http://www.frankyandjohnnys.com/ <-ate there two nights ago

Pizza:
Rocky’s Pizza is really good <a href=“CitySearch - Your local city guide”>CitySearch - Your local city guide;
Slice, just up the street car line is good too if you don’t have a car. You can ride the street car down from campus to there. http://www.slicepizzeria.com/

Mexican:
Nacho Mama’s http://www.nachomamasmexicangrill.com/
Juan’s Flying Burrito : http://www.juansflyingburrito.com/index.php?s=locations

Commanders in the Garden District - Good, but expensive.

If you like taquerias try Felipe’s, behind the Tulane campus and just across Claiborne.

One of my favorites is Pascal’s Manale Restaurant on the other side of St. Charles from the Garden District by about 6 blocks I think. Anyway, it is medium priced compared to the big name places, and the BBQ shrimp is the orginal and the best. Don’t pay attention to the name of the dish, it really has nothing to do with BBQ, but if you like spicy (not burn your mouth off spicy) it is fantastic. Manales has been around forever and is still a local favorite.

agree about Jacques Imo’s.
I’d add Dick & Jenny’s, off Chop somewhere. Very local, great alligator cheesecake!

Jacque Imos and check out the Maple Leaf next door (yes take your student in as well,you don’t have to buy him a drink) for some great music.

Dante’s Kitchen and Brigstens near the river are wonderful. And of course, the Camellia Grill on Carrollton for a unique NOLA-style diner experience. We also like Crabby Jack’s (Jacques Imo’s casual lunch place) on the way to the airport. Also recommend Cassamentos on Magazine and Luizza’s by the Track.

Highly recommend Commanders Palace, walkable from St. Charles streetcar.

Camellia Grille is popular. There is also a thread in this forum from about 2 yrs ago with great recommendations. I’ll see if I can find it.

Here ya go http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/400470-good-restaurants-near-campus.html

Deanie’s. They have two locations - one in Bucktown, and the other in the French Quarter (though it’s not really in the thick of things). The Bucktown location isn’t much to look at, but the French Quarter one is pretty nice. I wouldn’t say it’s that expensive… you get some good-sized portions, too.

[Deanies Seafood Restaurant](http://www.deanies.com/restaurant.html)

My s and his friends like Semolina’s on Magazine St [Semolina Home : Semolina](Semolina) They have a mac and cheese cake that is incredible (sounds gross, but its really good). Here’s the menu Semolina;

Lebanon’s Cafe in Uptown (it’s actualy REALLY close to Tulane)

Commanders & Lillete on Magazine not cheap, but great value for excellent food.

Juan’s Flying Burrito

Upperlines is excellent and not too far from Tulane

Camellia Grill has great atmosphere and entertaining service, but the food is very greasy and the restaurant is generally filthy. Byblos on Magazine St. has very good Middle Eastern cuisine and friendly, attentive service. Close to Byblos is a great pastry shop and gelateria named Sucre. (Their blood orange sorbetto is the best I have ever had!) There’s a cool place on River Road in Jefferson (about 4 miles from campus) named the Rivershack Tavern. The Rivershack has great atmosphere and excellent po boys and was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
