It seems Greek life is a big part of Wake. What’s it like socially for a student who is social but doesn’t drink and isn’t interested in joining a social fraternity?
Although my view isn’t as colorful as @verycornfused 's, I would agree with his assessment. I’m a parent of a junior male who is non Greek. He thought about doing it as a freshmen but ultimately decided against it as he had a large group of friends (from his freshmen dorm) and none of them rushed.
He has had a ton of fun, is pretty active in clubs and has several groups of friends. Some of his friends don’t drink at all. Others partake a little and some do on a regular basis (primarily weekends as the workload is pretty heavy. He was a non drinker in HS and has expanded his world view quite a bit.
One thing that surprised me was how often he’s invited to sorority date functions. I would have thought the sororities would be matched up with frats for that. He has friends in several and is invited quite frequently. Also, the clubs he’s involved in are also quite social. I’d echo the comment about upperclassmen not being super involved. More of a Freshman / Sophomore thing. S actually roomed with a frat brother and they became pretty good friends.
Having a three yr on campus housing requirement and the many Wake traditions provide for a very close knit community regardless of Greek life. It’s likely a different experience, but non-greeks can and do have a full social life at Wake.
