Does anyone know if a person can get lead roles in the shows at U Mich if they are not a Theatre/Music/Dance major? For example, someone who is a History major with a vocal performance or theatre minor?

Michigan has a very accomplished student-run theatre company called “Musket”, which has been around for many years. It has a good-sized budget and stages some fantastic shows at the same venues that the MT shows use. This is the outlet for non-MT majors who have the talent. As for MT mainstage shows: I don’t know how a non-major would even get an audition, and if they did, I don’t know what would compel a director to cast them, since their job is to develop the MT students.

I believe they have shows specifically for non-majors. I heard that the show now for non-major is Hairspray…

This year Musket did Hairsray and will do Little Shop of Horrors in the spring. There are also Basement Arts productions which are student directed, acted, and designed and are open to the whole University of Michigan community. They do some type of performance every weekend. The line up this year included Proof, God of Carnage, Tragedy: A Tragedy.

MUSKET shows are also open to majors, who often participate when they aren’t cast in the Department shows. But the auditions are open to all and there is no bias against non-majors being cast. :)

i was just in Hairspray and it was an awesome experience! i definitely recommend MUSKET!
