I plan to apply to transfer from a California community college to a 4 year institution this coming spring. Since my situation is a bit atypical and I am not as familiar with US universities as many of you are, I was hoping you could give me some advice on which schools to apply to.
Here are some details about myself:
- About a year and a half ago I moved permanently to the USA from a small Central European country.
- I have the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma from my home country.
- I’m white European, female, currently in my mid to late twenties. I attended university in my home country for about a year but didn’t graduate or receive a degree.
- I’m into my second year at Community College. Courses I have completed: Calculus (my college offers two math sequences, I chose the easier of the two), the usual GE and English / Foreign Language Requirements, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Managerial Accounting.
- My current Community College GPA: 4.0. It’s not a guarantee, but I think there’s a good chance I can keep this GPA for this semester and next.
- I speak several languages: German (native), English (fluent), French (intermediate), Italian (conversational).
- ECs: In my home country, I worked for six months as an intern at a small financial services firm and for a year as a teller at a multinational bank.
- ECs: This semester, I am the president of one of the general honor societies at my community college. I am active in a local club made up of expats from my home country.
- LORs: I anticipate asking my old supervisor and a current professor. I expect the letters to be reasonably strong.
- Long term goals: Work in international finance or accounting for a multinational company.
What would be suitable “target schools” for me? My main priority is maximizing career prospects after graduation. A good reputation for the university abroad would be a plus as I might return to Europe at some point, but it’s not a must. Cost and geography are not major concerns. I would love to attend a school like USC or NYU, but I’m not sure if my profile puts them too far out of reach. I would love to hear your suggestions, thank you!
