Non-Traditional Vet (BY1987) Student

Hello - and thanks for taking time to be here,

The title says it all really. I’m a non-traditional student looking at several schools. I am in the armed forces (Navy: Fire Controlman) and am looking at colleges which fit my mental model. I’ve read through several (more than a few…many more) discussions on CC detailing what to expect from, and as a student at CIT. Enter the only thing that appears to matter, and sounds very good to me; The work is hard - the work is never-ending, and everybody is smart. Perfect. I have no fear of late nights, early mornings, extremely difficult work, and impossible deadlines. I don’t need to be THE best, but I will be my BEST… Where that puts me is up to the 99%. Based on my reading of CIT this attitude appears to go very well within CIT. This is where my curiosity gets the better of me. I’m a STEM tinkerer and always have been. That will never change with or without CIT. Enough long lines about me… to some shorter bits and on to my question.

Age: 28 (07JUN87)
Sex: M H: 6’4" W: 240lbs. (I doubt you care but lets be somewhat thorough)
Occupation: FC2 USN | 2x Deployments | 9 letters of com, 3x NAMS, 18x individual awards
(Big guns, Missiles, Electromechanical systems, Radar, Fiber networks, Lots of linux, Embedded systems, and world class toys)
Background: Glacier Park, Montana. I grew up without power - witnessed Tesla’s wonders in my teens, and fell in love with lighting the world with the magic of electrons. Nothing has changed.
Academic background: Solid - a history of being the best, and in more recent years being absolutely outstanding above all of my peers in all categories. (Just like every other CIT student I imagine)

I have come across many entrance applications for veterans/non-traditional students from other universities. The CIT application is one of the least friendly in this department, however through my multiple perusals of the CIT website I have found that the school does have a “veteran friendly” process. My interest isn’t a “what are my chances” as I doubt anyone really knows, as I’m likely a low %'er. My curiosity is if you know any veteran students who have applied/attended or know any non-traditional (old people) who have applied/attended CIT. If you do can you tell me about them, their time there or if possible get me in contact with them? Do you know any extra information about the process for veterans? If you know something I should be asking, and I’m not asking it - care to enlighten me?

My apologies…I should have originally included my hobbies. I for one reason or another cannot figure out how to add/edit the original post. These hobbies and my general attitude towards the world around me are what I’m using to find a college that I will fit/work in. I don’t want to change me or a campus, I want a place where these hobbies become more robust and journeymen (not professional, I don’t need/want money for fun…I just want to know more)
Hobbies:
Brew my own (wine, beer, Ethyl Alcohol…for an engine I broke down and run on 100% homegrown)
Reloading (Pistols, Rifles, and occasionally for a cannon I built…tinkering with a MPD cannon/rifle also)…for those who don’t know…this is quite literally rocket science
Model Rockets (more rocket science)
Chess (Yes I play, but I also tinker with editing and building code for chess engines and ending tables for low powered i86’s)
Anything linux OS (HTPC, HPC, Clusters, Home/Drone Automation, and anything that is tinker like that doesn’t include gaming)
Chemistry (if it goes boom, bang, spark, pfffft, or makes it shiny, I’ve played with it)
Electrochemistry (My first love, and last love…I’ve electro-plated more things than a semiconductor fab)
Arduino (…its cheap and unimaginably applicable to EVERYTHING)
Engines (Alcohol based race engines, Butanol based race engines, sterling motors, Magnetoplasmadynamic engines)

Hello sir, and thank you for serving.
[My parents raised me with manners, sorry if the language makes you uncomfortable]

While I may not know about CIT, I can give you some advice.

  • The reason why you weren’t able to edit your posts is because you can only edit your posts within the first 15-20

    minutes after it was posted.
*The Admissions office phone number that they tell applicants to contact is: (626)395-6341
Their email for undergraduate admissions is ugadmissions@caltech.edu
I imagine that you could ask them if there are any non-traditional or veterans in attendance currently, all else fails, be a trendsetter!
I do not recommend telling a college about the “reloading” or “Brew my own” aspects as they could possibly have a problem with that [that is super cool though]. I imagine that won’t be happening on a college campus, though.

Sorry I wasn’t able to help with the knowledge of current or previous non-traditional/veteran students. (I’m not going to attend Cal Tech)

Hope I was able to help,

Hello again sir,

I also just remembered that to notify someone you are speaking to in a forum setting in the conversation, you use an "@" sign and then begin to type their name.

So, @GNowakowski

Hope I was able to help,
