Non Work-Study Jobs

I am so thankful and shocked that I received enough scholarships to nearly cover not only my loans, but even my self-help (assuming that the Academic Competitiveness Grant is also awarded to me) minus $50.

However, I still feel obligated to work in order to help defray the costs that my mom has to pay. My question: is it difficult to find non work-study jobs on campus, or may the lord forbid, is finding work in not-so-beautiful Durham a pragmatic possibility?

And while I'm at it, anyone have experience with over-working, and how this may possibly affect your student contribution in the year after?

Nope, not very hard to find a work study job. Look around when you get to campus. What kind of job were you hoping to find?

As for overworking, you mean earn too much money? If so, then yes, your student contribution will go up. AFAIK, if you don't file your taxes as an independent, then your income will count as part of your family income and thus your total family contribution (which includes student contribution) will go up.

SBR, I believe that the OP was asking about non work study jobs.

Oh and being an RA is a great non work study job but you can't do that freshman year. I don't know of any others but I am sure they are out there.

Oh I meant to write non work study. Heh, wasn't quite awake when I replied. Yeah, every job I've had at Duke has been non work study, so it's alright.

It is definitely easy to find a non work study job at Duke. I don't know anyone who wanted a job and wasn't able to find one.

And it's definitely much better to work on campus than off, if possible. If I had a big test or paper, I would just tell my boss I couldn't come in that day. It's nice to have flexibility.

As far as amount of hours, most people I know worked between 4-8 hours a week (usually for two hours at a time). I worked 6 hours. It was a perfect amount of time to earn some spending money, but also was not so much that I was overwhelmed with work.

if you have any restaurant experience, a lot of durham restaurants near campus (many within walking distance and really nice) like hiring student servers and its a pretty popular option. that and bartending.

go to the job fair during orientation!
