I'm wanting to learn how to play the piano. I know the basics (reading music, a few chords, etc.) and can play simple songs - but I would love to develop this further. Unfortunately, my university doesn't offer classes for nonmajors. I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on finding a music student to give private lessons, preferably an hour a week? And around how much should I be paying for these services?

Thanks!

It sounds like you have a music dept. at your university?
You could e-mail either the head of the music dept. or the head of the Piano faculty and ask if they have any students who would like to give lessons. You could also see if the
music dept. has a bulletin board for notices and put up a fllyer asking for piano lessons.
When my son was in HS I paid a Doctoral student at UM $50/hr for cello lessons.
I have paid anywhere from $22- $36 for half hour instrumental lessons for my son and daughter depending on the expertise of the teacher. Good luck!

I don’t know about the school you go to, but schools like Juilliard have staff pianists used for accompanying students and such, and they also will teach as well. They don’t generally make a lot from what the school pays them, so having someone willing to pay them (especially in cash!) will prob be welcome. My S took lessons with one of the pianists at the program he was at, and it was like 40 or 50 an hour…so you should be able to find someone. For basic piano, a grad student might be a good option as well, I wouldn’t be surprised if you went to the music school area and looked at the bulletin board or whatever passes for one these days, you might see grad students advertising lessons:)
