Noonan Scholars (legit?)

I haven’t gotten the email yet. But I’m super nervous? Best of luck to everyone that applied. Hopefully we all get in

Got the email; I’ve been waitlisted :frowning: Hopefully there will be spots available by March 25th

Yeah I didn’t get in. I’ll have to find something else to do this summer

I got in but if I get into LEDA i’ll choose that over noonan

@Chexxx @broski @Nicholemarkham do you mind sharing your stats?

@imi3350 I’ll try to remember as best as I can what I put in my application.

GPA: 3.7/4 (4.5/5)
No class rank because my school has over 4000 students; your given a “scholar” status if you’re in the top 50 of your class.
PSAT: 1340 (high reading and writing, low math score).
AP Human Geography: 4
AP World History: 4
Currently taking APUSH and AP Lang. All Honors classes (except for regular trig sophomore year and regular precalc junior year). I had a C in Chinese III first semester this year that my interviewer brought up.

Extracurricular activities: Orchestra cello section leader, rugby, Girls Who Code, paid internship during the school year, computer refurbishment summer program sophomore year, academic decathlon.

I’m Hispanic (Mexican-american) living with a single mother whose income fits the program’s criteria.

My essay addressed the “describe a problem you’ve solved or would like to solve”. I tied in my interest in coding by describing my own experiences in a mostly-male class and how I’d like to increase women participation in STEM fields. For the essay on why I want to be in the program, I wrote about my mom and her family of immigrants, how their experiences have influenced me to pursue opportunities they didn’t have access to (I’m sure several applicants wrote the same thing lol).

My teacher recc was very good, but I’m not sure about my counselor’s (we don’t know each other that well other than when I have to meet with her to select classes).

The interview went for about 45-ish minutes. It felt OK, but there were times where I struggled to come up with an answer (so it turned into me rambling for a few seconds -.-). I feel like the interview part was the weakest part of my application.

If there’s anything that’s missing, let me know.

@broski can you send what the acceptance letter looks like?

umm… @imi3350 idk how to upload a picture on here (I’m new to college confidential)

GPA: 4.0 (Cumulative-Unweighted) 4.33 (Cumulative-Weighted)
Rank: 1/314 3/1226
PSAT: 1300 AP Computer Science Principles (3) AP Calculus AB (5) AP European History (4)

Classes: Started High School classes in 8th Grade, All Honors and Accelerated
Current: AP Biology, AP U.S. History, AP English Language, AP Spanish Language, AP Calculus BC
Dual Enrolled at Pasadena City College: Calculus Based Physics and Satistics

Extracurricular Activities: California Scholarship Federation (10th-VP, 11th-President), Environmental Club(Presidential Board-9th-11th), Freshmen Mentoring Program (Program Director), PLTW(Engineering program - Tutor and Member), Cross Country, and Track and Fields

Summers: 9th: Attended Cross Country practice, Pre-Calculus Classes, and Community College Classes, worked at
Uncle’s restaurant
10th: Got a scholarship to attend Summer Programs at Stanford and at Yale. In between the programs I
attended Cross Country practice (again) and worked at Uncle’s restaurant
Honors: Student of the Year (9th and 10th) - AP Honors award - PLTW plus AP award - scored top 2% for Hispanics in PSAT - Athlete Scholars for Track and Cross

I’m a Hispanic First-Generation - parents never attended elementary school(Dad) or Middle School(Mom)
Mom is undocumented and can’t work - only income provider is my Dad (10k per year)
Live with another family (shared house) - Don’t have a room or bed (sleep in the living room)

I chose the essay about my identity and talked about how my Dad was abusive who was addicted to alcoholism which translated to smoking, then gambling, then cocaine and how I grew up with the 2008 recession greatly affecting our family’s business which we eventually lost. Then I explained how despite my solemn circumstances I try to be funny and bring alacrity to my environments. In the part where they asked for any additional information I mentioned how I work part time to help my parents pay bills and how I family responsibilities.

I would say that my teacher’s recommendation was above average

The interview actually went very well. Lasted about an hour and at the end she explained how I was funny and had a good personality. As for my included video, I posted a link to “Take a Chance on Me” music video because I didn’t have time to make one so I figured it’ll only contribute to my “personality”

@broski wow, that’s extremely impressive! Is there a way you can copy and past the acceptance text?

Did anyone else get in ?

Did You? @Rosaamp22

I got accepted into LEDA so I rejected the Noonan offer

No , I did not, I got rejected but they said they had 900 applications for only 100 spots.

Is there a groupchat?

Are there any facebook or twitter updates about this program , the ones I have found have not been updated for a while, in fact they have not said anything about the scholars or anything since November when they announced the applications.

@Tutu8588 did you get in?

@imi3350 I did not apply but I was curious about the result . Don’t see any info anywhere. Did you get in ?

Yes, and this program is legit.

@imi3350 I hope so!
