The parents of a kid that just graduated from my school(and so went through the whole admissions process) said that and I was wondering if it is at all true. They said something about how they want kids from different areas of California, but I hope that's not true because I'm in SoCal and most of my college choices are in SoCal too. Can anyone verify or disclaim this?

i dont think its true..never heard of this concept in my life

Yea I’ve never heard of it either, that’s why I was suspicious.

Private colleges can decide what constitutes for them a “diverse” student body.

The UC and Cal State systems do not have that latitude, or really the time to try to balance nocal vs. socal, or ethnicity (which has been banned by the legislature).

I’m not sure there’s much of a difference between nocal and socal kids anyway.

This claim seems kind of suspicious. As far as I see, there appears to be no correlation between location and preference by colleges.

However, it’s important to remember that colleges aim for diversity. Having students from the opposite side of the state contributes to that.

Yes - there is quite a difference between NorCal and SoCal students. San Francisco and Los Angeles are approximately 400mi apart. On the east coast, that would be many states across. In fact, I sometimes wonder why California is one large state…
