North Carolina Colleges

Hi

Ive been searching for info on NC colleges but the ones I want to know about besides UNC haven't been mentioned. Does anyone know anything about the smaller schools like Elon University, Meredith College, Peace College and Barton College? From what I hear Barton isn't a higher caliber schools as the others, and obviously UNC is the most academic. This could totally be an assumption, Im not sure. Anyway I really like Meredith and am still considering Elon but because I don't know much about them, Im leaning more towards UNC. Can anyone help me with info?

We live in Athens GA and several kids from here go to Elon and Appalachian State. They seem to like both and each kid has had a job...rather good ones after graduating. Elon is sorta in the middle of nowhere NC so not a city feel. App. State is in Boone, I think..so snow sports are real big in the winter. Also athletics are rising there. They were the team that beat Michigan earlier in the fall. Neat kids go there, sorta individuals and not just the preppy crowd. Never hear of the other 3. Of course UNC Chapel Hill is awesome I am sure. Just depends on what size you want.

Elon is amazing. Everyone I've ever met who has gone there absolutely loves it. It is in a small town, but it's actually not too far from Greensboro (about maybe 30 minutes). It's a really great school, with a famous study abroad program.

Meredith is a private women's college located in Raleigh (about a mile down the road from NCSU). It's fairly selective, has an excellent reputation-- strong music dept, as well as education-- also strong visual art dept. Beautiful sprawling campus that has a path (greenway) that starts there and goes all the way to the NC Art Museum (about 3 miles total).

Peace is also a woman's college in Raleigh, downtown-- about 3 miles from Meredith, I guess. Smaller in size and population-- and while also a lovely campus (not as sprawling since it's a little more urban), it is not nearly as selective and not as good academically, I would say. It does have lots of money, though-- new buildings seem to be built all the time. I have no idea what depts are their strengths, though.

Of all those, UNC-CH is definitely the most selective, with best academics, offerings, campus, etc-- and certainly has the best reputation; then I would rank them (in terms of selectivity and reputation of academics) -- Meredith, Elon, Peace, Barton. Elon and Barton are both co-ed; the other 2 are not, as I'm sure you know. Meredith and Peace are in Raleigh; Elon's drawback is its location-- gorgeous campus, but located in what is basically a village. Elon is gaining more notice and seems to be a real draw to people from the Northeast; known for having a strong performing arts/musical theatre dept.

Hope that helps. If you're interested in UNC-CH, I can't imagine that you would find these other schools appealing (and vice-versa). Also, if you are good enough to get into UNC-CH (and, secondarily, Meredith or Elon), I would remove Barton and Peace from your list. My 2 cents.

Check out Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.

Great little quaker school.

Have you considered Queens U at all? It is in a pretty park-like area in the city of Charlotte, but don't let the university word fool you, it is small residential wise, since many students commute.

My daughter will be attending Queens University of Charlotte next year. It is a small school on a beautiful campus. About 900 students live in the dorms. We are from Florida and my daughter has met many out of state students. She fell in love with the school during our summer visit and did an overnight in December. Class sizes are small and there is lots of individualized attention. Also it is right in Charlotte, minutes from concerts, shopping, restaurants, etc. We visited Elon, but she did not like the small town feel. 100 percent of students do internships and about 90 percent of students take advantage of the included study abroad. I could go on and on, but I will answer any questions on here or by private message.

OP - - do a quick search; there was a very recent and informative thread re: North Carolina schools.
