I might need a little bit of help here… so I am planning to major in biological sciences (WCAS) but I don’t know whether north or south campus would be more suitable for me. Thank you.
North campus is closer to tech / science classes - BUT NU is really pretty small - (unless it is mid-winter and 20 below with wind-chill off the lake…) Google Earth is Your Friend - and you can see how close everything is.
In truth your major doesn’t really need to have that much weight on whether you should live north or south. If you are studying engineering, theater, or maybe journalism, you probably will have the great majority of your classes on one end of campus or the other, but anything else and you’ll probably have a good amount of classes in all parts of campus. My advice is to decide which side of campus you’re most interesting in living on (taking into account the different feel/culture of each side of campus, proximity to SPAC or Norris or downtown Evanston, as well as particular buildings or ResColleges you’re interested in living in) and not to simply base your preferences on your major.
Yeah. Things will change for you over the year! Theres no need to feel like committing to any specific dorm.
The overwhelming majority of your classes will be in south campus. For shorter walks in the winter, choose somewhere in South campus
North vs South campus is a real misnomer. The only reason it’s called that is because you have a seminary in the middle where NU students aren’t going. If that area was repurposed to be part of the campus, you’d just say - oh, a tall thin campus as opposed to North vs South. I always lived south (was in WCAS, and was in a sorority); my son, a current senior, has spent time both in North and South - either way, chances are you’ll have classes and friends in both “hemispheres.” Don’t make too big a deal out of it - it’s a 5 minute walk, not some Great Divide.
Some people say the divide is pretty great. Most people I know don’t agree. I think Freshman year it might be a little more pronounced, with fraternity parties, not being used to campus, etc. But honestly you should just pick whichever dorm you think will fit what you want the best, and not worry too much about it.
