My DS was rejected (not sure exact major but something social science related). We visited (and he was in contact with his admissions officer). He has strong ECs, a rigorous courseload (15+ APs), and relatively high stats (3.96UW, 4.6W, 1490 SAT). He was probably not a perfect fit for NEU (it was completely different from most of the other schools (mid- and small-sized) he applied to. Definitely helped that he got into Tufts on the same day he got rejected from Northeastern.
I did the pre-read and the need based aid was as expected ($0). I did expect some merit aid because I had high stats, and received $0. (I was also supposed to get $18,370 a year from RaiseMe, but they are saying that itâs not in their system and that they canât give me that money.) Iâm not exactly sure what merit aid is based on, so it mightâve been justified seeing as other parts of my application were lacking.
My son did not receive any merit. We did not apply for FA.
My understanding is that Northeastern is more generous with need-based aid than merit aid.
They have definitely changed the merit/need mix in the last few years with need based aid increasing.
Iâm sorry. It seems that way this year. My dd was waitlisted at a Target AND Safety school. 4.0, lots of leadership and EC. Hopefully the right one for your dd will come as an acceptance this week. Hang in there.
DS got waitlisted for Northeastern. What is the % of acceptance from waitlist? Anyone know?
He applied to Mechanical engineering.
My daughter was waitlisted. 1470 SAT, 3.9 GPA unweighted, 6 APs, all honor classes, leadership, lots of extra activities. The decision was OK since it was not her top choice.
My daughter was waitlisted from Northeastern. She was also waitlisted from her top choice (safety) and was devastated. We how you feel. Just know the right college is out there.
A friendâs daughter was accepted from EA, listed NE as first choice on NMF form. They were somewhat disappointed at receiving 15k as merit. I guess NE doesnât have a set amount for NMF merit, unlike USC which is set at half tuition.
Did you submit your RaiseMe application in time?
Son will likely do the same. Applied RD (did an REA so canât do EA for NE), waitlisted for mechanical engineering, accepted at UCLA.
I am not sure if one can predict this year even with historical data as this year they added Oakland campus.
Son also applied for MechE and waitlisted. He has a classmate who did ED and got in. A friendâs daughter did EA and got in. So ED, even EA definitely boost chances to get in. NE wasnât high enough on sonâs list and he couldnât do EA since he did an REA.
NE is pretty popular here. He visited and his older brotherâs high school alum showed him around. We think the campus is pretty nice, although one of her clubâs space was small and inside an older building, not too impressive. Boston is great, NE doesnât need additional writing which made it one of the easiest applications to submit.
Son attends a small competitive private high school (day, not boarding). At the beginning of the process, he was more attracted to small to medium size private colleges. Since he is applying to Mech E, we did several large state colleges as well and interesting enough he has done much better with the bigger public universities. He is leaning towards UCLA (in state), runner up - UIUC (supposedly MechE ranks higher though OOS).
3.93UW(no Bâs, some A-'s), SAT1530/ACT35(submitted ACT), if interested.
Yes, I did. They told me that I didnât, but I have proof I submitted it and I know for sure I submitted on November 1st. I did, however, apply to Northeastern on January 2nd instead of January 1st (application deadline listed on RaiseMe) because Northeastern extended the deadline to January 3rd. I was unaware that this could affect my RaiseMe until long after I submitted my application Iâve told RaiseMe about this and they said they would contact Northeastern about it, so I think there might have been some miscommunication between them.
Correct, NU used to offer set amounts for NMF but have been trending away from that for years now. It is clear on their webpage. my sense is with more TO and a stronger focus on need based aid, it does not make sense to reward high test scores.
Happy for your son but itâs all about the yield protection.
We didnât qualify for financial aid and my D23 knew when she applied that NEU would only be an option if she received a decent merit award. She was accepted early action but didnât receive anything ânot even a few bucks for snack money!
.
According to the CDS, over 50% of students with no financial need (1,320 students) received an estimated average merit award of $18,639 last cycle. I have seen very few posts about students getting merit awards on the threads this year so you may be right about NEU decreasing their merit awards.
In any case, my D23 has received some generous merit awards from other privates and has some affordable public options (UVA, Pitt, UNC) that she is excited to revisit. With NEU coming in at over 80k, it was very easy for her to walk away and decline their âfull freightâ offer.
All the best to your son, wherever he lands!
Thank you! Best of luck to your daughter! Sounds like she has great options!
Looking back over a few years of CDS, the need based aid has gone up a fair amount, but merit aid has not dropped too much over the last few years⊠maybe $1000 or so on average.
I think itâs important to remember that CC is a small subset of applicants and Iâve seen a trend of people using other platforms than CC these days.
We are in the same boat here. At this point we have no idea what she is doing because she has been rejected or waitlisted at her top choices. She has has a 4.6 w gpa, APs, sports, lots of ECs. She has been so disappointed. Iâm starting to think it could be her major as she applied for Mechanical Engineering.
