NORTHEASTERN DISMISSES 11 STUDENTS FOR GATHERING IN VIOLATION OF COVID-19 POLICIES

"Northeastern has dismissed 11 first-year students after they were discovered together in a room at the Westin Hotel in Boston on Wednesday night, in violation of university and public health protocols that prohibit crowded gatherings.

The students (and their parents) were notified Friday that they must vacate the Westin within 24 hours. Before departing, they were required to undergo COVID-19 testing at Northeastern, with the understanding that anyone who tests positive will be moved into wellness housing at the university until they have recovered, in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The students have been informed that they are no longer part of the Northeastern community for the fall semester. They have the right to contest their dismissal at an expedited hearing." …

Wow - can they return for spring semester?

Northeastern’s press release did not say. It did say that the students were in the N.U.in program, which is normally spring admission with fall term special program (study abroad, but could also be in Boston): https://www.northeastern.edu/nuin/what-is-nuin/

Assuming the expectations and consequences were clearly communicated, and it sounds like they were (my D had to sign a physical form acknowledging similar), I’m fine with this.

“ Payments by the students will not be refundable, per guidelines of the N.U.in Program.”

That should get their attention and probably trigger some communications from parents of remaining students.

Cornell’s wishy-washy “double secret probation” do-nothing response to blatantly ignoring similar standards will just encourage continued violations.

In reading other blogs the feeling among Northeastern students is generally “good riddance” to those 11 students. Although many feel that a partial refund of tuition and R&B should be made.

The the expectations and consequences have been clearly communicated to students and their families the entire summer via emails, university news releases, parent and student webinars, and reemphasized upon student arrival via signing of agreements, including a two-hour review for the NU.in students.

These 11 students made an incredibly poor choice in spite of being exceptionally well informed of the expectations and clear consequences for violating the rules.
