Northeastern’s weighting system gives +0.5 for honors classes and +1.0 for AP classes.
I’m not sure how they deal with different systems that use pre-IB, IB, and dual enrollment, for example. This also ends up somewhat skewed since the raw weighted GP would end up punishing people for taking additional electives like art or orchestra. It’s some measure for them to compare, but it’s not the end-all measure. I had a 4.0 unweighted with a full IB diploma course and still came out with only a 4.2 weighted GPA by Northeastern’s system because I also took a lot of electives like band and art classes.
@nanotechnology are you sure about the weighting system? I had the idea in my head that they only used unweighted GPA… I could be wrong, but I just wanted to verify
They did say (this is four years ago so things can change) that they recalculate HS GPA using their own formula using a 5.0 scale and gave bonus for AP classes etc. although I don’t think they gave all the specifics (like which classes they include etc.)
If they didn’t use some form of weighted GPA, there’s no way they could have a median GPA of 4.1 or whatever it is.
@c011e9e - do you mean high school freshman GPA? Yes, they count your whole 4 year GPA. But if there’s an upward trend, that’s a more qualitative factor they’ll take into account when evaluating your application.

Northeastern admissions staff indicated they weight an applicant’s transcript for internal review purposes…not sure if admitted student info on website reports this weighted GPA metric. Others schools such as Villanova report weighted gpa on admissions stats/student profile page.
@suzyQ7 Sorry for being a little late, but I have some questions. So you can still get into the honors program even if your ACT score is not in the top 25%+? I heard that they do top 10% for each college… I would apply with a 4.5 NEU GPA and a 33 ACT to either the college of arts, design and media or the college of sociology and humanities. Do you know if that would be enough to get into the honors program for those colleges? Sorry to be so frantic; I visited the campus yesterday and loved it!!
@ap012199 The honors credentials are not clear to anyone - we don’t know if they admit to honors by college or how it really works to determine top 10%. On your tour yesterday, did they talk about honors criteria at all or about the changes to the honors program that is coming?
@suzyQ7 yes, but they were being quite nebulous. They said honors students typically had GPAs of 4.2-4.5 and ACT of 33+ (super score). They didn’t talk about the revamp of the program; what are the rumors about it, though?
Also, since many of the kids who are accepted to the honors program don’t attend because they use NEU as a safety, do kids that were on the boarder line get an offer to attend the honors program?
Out of my love for this school, I compiled all of the SAT scores* and GPAs posted on this thread into an Excel document, and ran the averages. If you want the Excel file, PM me.
