I plan on studying engineering and I’m completely lost other than I have some family near Boston. Any advice would be appreciated!!
Cost difference? Affordability?
Cleveland vs. Boston?
Cost difference doesn’t really matter due to scholarships from both schools. City is something I considered but not something I’m 100% gonna base my choice off (Boston being the better of the two of course)
Both are great schools, particularly strong in STEM. As an engineering major coop should be considered an advantage for Northeastern. The high tech community in the Boston area is well known.
Location and co-op would be the biggest differences. How do you feel about the co-op program at Northeastern?
What else is important to you beyond strength in engineering? They are pretty much peers academically there.
This may be way too late but it’s an issue I take close to heart so I’m gonna respond anyways…
As someone who grew up in Cleveland and fell in love with Northeaster, here’s my take:
I’ve spent my entire life on CWRU’s campus. Both of my parents went there (Pysc and comp sci/chemistry/engineering majors) and I am on campus every Saturday for a music program.
The campus has changed TREMENDOUSLY in the past 5ish years. Entirely new student center and “college town” area (In quotes because It’s more of a street of really cool buildings and restaurants. really cool modern feel, awesome bowling alley)
The campus is honestly gorgeous and cleveland is on an amazing upswing. Downtown is being completely revitalized due to our new winning sports teams and the 2016 RNC. there are plenty of fantastic restaurants and things to do that rival any other big city. (In some ways surpass because the true winners are easy to spot rather than 50 okay restaurants all fighting for the same consumer base)
While i’m not an expert on engineering since Im personally looking into music, I can only say that Case’s engineering school is certainly renowned and rigorous. The star of CWRU is of course close proximity to the Cleveland Clinic, making many fantastic possible careers in medical- related engineering fields, though there are certainly many opportunities in the city for other types of engineers. A friend of mine who went to Johns Hopkins but recently moved to Cleveland found that it was very difficult to find a job as most employers take CWRU grads right out of college.
THAT BEING SAID
I would not personally prefer to go to case because my parents live 20 minutes away and it feels like home
I’m actually pretty sad about that because case is a fantastic school
For me, Northeastern has better programs for the type of music major I want to be. As far as engineering goes i’m pretty sure both schools are equally fantastic. I also know both schools have grown increasingly competitive admissions wise in the past 15 years.
If a co-op is something you’re looking for then northeastern is probably the right choice, though you can certainly work with advisors at case to find internships (even paid ones) with nearby companies.
There are plenty of people who will tell you boston is by far a superior city to cleveland, as a cleveland native I am most definitely biased but can honestly say cleveland is a fantastic place to live. (and incredibly affordable)
So to anyone deciding between the two, visit and see which one you can see yourself at (and then look to see which one wants you more)
