Decision (and if deferred EA): Deferred, then Rejected
ACT: 34
GPA (UW/W + Scale Info): 3.65UW, 3.81W (low grades due to travel for sport)
State/Country: California, Bay Area (lived in MA for 14 years tho)
Major: Business Administration, Marketing
Did you apply for FA?: Nope
Honors/NMF/etc: Regional awards (gold, silver, bronze) for snowboarding, competed at nationals twice. Legacy (dad went there).
Super disappointed that I wasn’t accepted, it was one of my favorite schools. Historically, everyone from my school with my ACT has gotten in. But I heard that they yield protect (was also rejected from Case Western)? Just a guess. I thought that I was a pretty solid applicant but apparently not.
@TomSrOfBoston I did, complete with my regional results for this snowboarding season (2x gold, 1x silver, 3x bronze). I also got a job in January, and even sent an updated resume. I even attended this “invite only” event in October (flew across the country and missed school to attend). I don’t really know what I did wrong. All the schools that I have left coming out are high target or reaches for me, which makes me even more nervous for the end of the month.
Direct acknowledgment of legacy in my rejection letter too;
“Your family’s relationship to the university is important to us, and we are happy to work with you to help you gain admission to Northeastern for a future semester as a transfer student. Students who enroll at a regionally accredited two- or four-year institution and earn a competitive grade point average may apply for a future term. If you would like to learn more about transfer opportunities, please contact the admissions counselor responsible for your area.”
Question re: Aid from NU. If a student doesn’t qualify for any financial aid, and that student strongly prefers NU, but received significantly more merit aid from UMass Amherst, is it ok for that student’s parents to contact NU to discuss if more merit aid were possible? Or, should the student self-advocate, even though the issue is parental finances?
(Student was offered $22K Dean’s List Merit by Northeastern.)
Sorry about your result. Going into this admission cycle, I would have thought someone with your stats would be a shoe in. But as you can see for yourself on this thread, admissions were brutal this year. You will never know for sure why you didn’t get in, but my guess would be your GPA. As far as the legacy acknowledgement, probably something NU puts in all legacy denial letters. I hope your luck changes with the schools you are still waiting to hear from.
Merit aid would max out near 22K as is so I don’t think it would be too successful, unfortunately. The only merit over 22K I’ve seen is for honors, NMF, etc and even that tops out at 30K, making only an 8K difference in 70K total.
If you think it is possible to appeal/apply for FA, that option may have more of a chance at a significant bump, though again it would be unlikely.
My D was accepted with Deans scholarship and CAMD portfolio scholarship. I just noticed that there was no information about honor college in her decision letter. Does it mean that she did not get in honor program? Her ACT 36, GPA 4uw/4.5w, NMF and presidential scholar candidate, good EC.
@PengsPhils How come? With her stats, she should be no problem to get in honor program. I did not see students accepted by RD mentioned honor program. Did NU only accept honor by EA or ED?
I believe all or most of the Honors decisions came out in February since their Honors Admitted Students Day was this past weekend. I was accepted in the Honors program as a RD applicant.
@zzd857 My son applied EA and wasn’t offered Honors. He did get a nice merit scholarship plus information on possibly double majoring in the two choices he put down for major. Based on the number of students with high stats who were not even offered admission or put on the wait list, we aren’t put out about missing out on honors.
@zzd857 Only an adcom could tell you why not, but generally only the top 10% of the admitted student pool gets honors and it is a holistic decision. Generally I wouldn’t worry about it as the experience between honors and not is pretty minimal, mainly being a few housing perks and the often accompanying scholarship.
@zxd857 my daughter also accepted to CAMD with Dean’s merit and portfolio scholarship. She was not offered honors either. We were told earlier on this blog that since she was accepted in to a interdisciplinary double major she would not be able to also do the honors coursework. She chose to do the double in Theater and Media studies.
My daughter (this was entering in 2012 so things might have changed) was able to do honors as a combined major (Math/Econ). A few of her honors friends also had combined majors.
