Northeastern University 2020 RD

@kitkat57 you could try to negotiate for money. As in call and ask, say you’re very interested but would need a little more. Also say that the cost will play a role in your decision. You should do this for all of your schools since money is a factor for you.

@CBSQandA - my daughter appealed her merit offer - at $14k per year it’s half of what anyone else offered, and they did not change it. We still have not accepted her admission offer, as she is waiting to hear about a full-tuition scholarship at her second choice school.

Very bad advice. Appeals may get a couple thousand more but little else.

So, beyond accepting offers at less competitive schools where your stats might be a drawing card and offers more generous notwithstanding, can you share your reasoning about this being bad advice and any ideas for accepted students with low merit who want to attend?

@TomSrOfBoston “Very bad advice”?? If there’s even a chance she could get more money, wouldn’t it be worth it? Even just a few thousand dollars. With her situation, it’s the only thing she can really do.

Northeastern is so out of reach that I’m not even going to bother, plus I’m not interested in NU in. I’m honestly kind of offended that they gave me $0 because I think I demonstrate need and merit - shows that they don’t really want me. I will be appealing all of my other schools. Not my dream school so I’m not too upset. Thanks for the advice though. @“Dissapointed but not Surprised” @TomSrOfBoston

anyone accepted to NU immerse program?

@TomSrOfBoston @Dissapointed but not Surprised I don’t think its a bad idea to appeal financial aid awards even if its just for a few thousand dollars if it can mean the difference between being able to attend and not. We just negotiated $5K more in merit money from a school that meant the difference between my DS being able to attend or not. Now its our lowest offer!

A few thousand naybe but if you were hoping for $15,000 in merit aid and got nothing it is a waste of time.

@TomSrOfBoston That’s likely very true. I’ll agree to that!

guys do u know what exactly is the NU immerse
?

Accepted NU.in from Northern Virginia
Act: 31 super score GPA: 4.43
Varsity lax, pres of Deca and key club and a couple other EC’s
Good essay
Was surprised to get in as I applied randomly and never shown interest before, got no money though so it is unlikely I will be able to attend :frowning:

Rejected after Deferred EA

OOS Asian male

Civil Engineering

1460 SAT superscore
3.55 UW 4.2 W
SAT Subject Tests: Math II 760 Physics 740
AP Calc AB exam (4)

Honestly wrote a last minute, mediocre application that was rushed and lacking substance

Did not visit, showed little interest

Recommendations: Counselor 9/10, Calculus 10/10, English 6/10

I sent them updates about my major music awards after deferral and whatnot, but didn’t seem to work out.

Just goes to show the game they’ve been playing to “move up in the rankings” and that stats aren’t everything

NOT my dream school by any stretch of the phrase

I guess that Northeastern figured that out.

Anyone seen cumulative profiles for admitted students, yet?

Waitlisted for D’Amore-McKim
3.8 unweighted / 4.4 weighted
1450 SAT
5 APs (+2 more senior year)
Pretty strong ECs with a focus on business
Did visit Northeastern last year
I was deferred for early action and wrote a LOCI to my regional admissions officer, saying why I was interested in Northeastern and an update to my application (got an internship at an accounting firm in January.)
I have accepted my spot on the waitlist and am sending another letter of continued interest.
I really want to go to Northeastern, is there any chance I will actually get off the waitlist?

@jill2244 Yes, my 2020 requested NUIn as his first choice as he saw what an incredible experience my 2018 had, who also requested it. We were just looking through the locations. Very hard decision. I think we need a little more clarity on which carry his major of Engineering. He is having a hard time picking. The NUin youtube videos are great to see some of the opportunities. Just google NUin london, NuinMontreal ect.
@arltaco11 check out the youtube videos for sure.

@ccstratt They only say in Boston, not necessarily at Northeastern. They will come up with an experience for those students. My 2018 did NUin so we are just pretty confident it will all work out. I think with Covid college students everywhere need to stay flexible for fall. None of us really know if things will be back to normal by then. My 2020 is pretty certain he will enroll in NUin for 2020 and we are just trying to keep in mind the virus circumstances are changing all the time.

Has anyone already received a letter similar to this one with the entire offer of financial assistance that includes not just merit scholarship but also other details - other grants, loans, work study etc? That should be under “Application Status Check” but isn’t. https://studentfinance.northeastern.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/fin-aid-letter.jpg
