Are you looking into the program or interested?
Did any accepted student get an email from NEU after the decision?
probably not

Yes, they have the email to tell you to sign up for those virtual welcoming events
Others have given good info but essentially Northeastern CS is all over the eastern seaboard as well as Silicon Valley. Among top SV companies, itās actually one of the 25 most common schools for new grad hires as of 2017, and based on trends, even better than then: HiringSolved2017Report.pdf | DocDroid
I personally am a CS grad who co-opād and now works for a billion dollar+ tech company based in CA, though I chose the NYC office. Know plenty of friends who are now at Amazon, Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook, Lyft, Uber, Tesla etc after doing co-opās there.
From a research perspective, it does quite well too: http://csrankings.org/
Academically, itās also a unique teaching approach thatās known nationally. This essay details it well: Developing Developers
Incidentally, today the intro CS book authored by a Northeastern CS college leader is actually at the top of Hacker News, a common ātradesā type site for CS people thatās run by Y Combinator (a known SV investment group thing).
@NJcollege2021 here as well for CS context!
@NJcollege2021 Getting into specifics of your case, thatās a notable cost difference when comparing to a school with similar CS strength, so Iād say if fit is equal, Purdue probably makes sense just on financials. But if you have the money to spare and prefer Northeastern, it really becomes a question of the value to you. Again, only if you have the money. Donāt choose more debt or debt vs no debt, thereās no sense there for any school when you have good alternatives.
Just to triple clarify for people, the co-op information here is not at all accurate for Northeastern.
-
Co-op pay is $18 an hour I believe as of a few years ago, though thatās a school average and varies a lot more by major/field.
-
Northeastern co-opās are 6 months long for most cases, with the potential to be 8 or 4.
-
Co-opās start in sophomore/junior year, but you do multiple in most cases, typically 2-3.
-
The math generally works out to be pretax earnings of hourly * 1000, so the average would be $18K. However, much more important to note is that you still have living expenses, typically in costly cities. Co-op pay covers these but means that unless youāre on the high end of co-op pay either due to a top co-op or a high paying field, youāll probably not pocket nearly as much as you think. Generally Iād guess close to 5K a co-op for most, though of course outliers can pocket more.
Son accepted NUin in RD
Mechanical Engineering
Deans Scholarship $80k ($20k per year)
4.0 UW, 10 AP + Hon PLTW Engineering Pathway
1550 SAT (one sitting)
Strong Leadership and ECās
Public High School in CA (Fringe Rural)
Withdrew application: Did not apply for NUin. Heās just not interested in spending first semester of college abroad. Terrific program and scholarship, but not the right fit for my student.
Congrats to those accepted and best wishes to those on the waitlist!
Thank you so much for all these valuable information-even from a insider! Great to know NU has deep connections with Silicon Valley. My secret hope is he can work some where close to home after graduate:). Of cause I can only āhopeā that!
One extra question: do students still look for regular āinternshipsā or they only do ācoopsā through school?
Thanks again for taking time to reply!!
Most people stick to co-opās but people do internships sometimes either if a company only works on summer timelines (sometimes doing 2 internships instead of a co-op to fill the same 6-8 months of time) or sometimes before co-opās start in like freshman year summer, depending on class plans and experience level. Itās a complex answer but the short version is that internships arenāt off the table.
is it common for peopleās co-ops/internships to last past their co-op period? I saw a girl who had a co-op at a hospital and continued her position while in school (Iām guessing she worked significantly less hours, of course).
Gotcha. Thanks!!
The only thing I was really incorrect about was the length of coops which I thought were only a semester long but I now know are longer. The pay is relatively the same as what I mentioned though. Since I was wrong about the length I was wrong about overall pay. Lol but donāt say ānot at all accurateā
I think this is really dependent on the employer. A few of my Dās friends have this arrangement, but I get the sense that itās not all that common.
@PengsPhils @TomSrOfBoston @therealchipaway
thanks all for your great suggestions. This is maybe a silly question do you think we can reach out to admissions requesting any scholarship that can be awarded? Son got many scholarships from schools out of 16 schools he applied he got 6 schools awarded him scholarships, I am not sure we can mention that in the email to the office of admissions, how do we approach and format of this email, you can DM me if you have suggestions on the email, really appreciate it!
He is keen on the NEU and NUin program to travel out of the country as he loves to.
Merit aid appeals likely would not be successful. If your student did receive a merit award from a peer school (BU, Case, Tulane, Lehigh etc. that award letter should be included in the appeal.
Common, but not crazy common. If I had to guess a percentage of people who do it, Iād say 10-15% max. The most common variant is doing 8 months instead of 6, particularly on the spring cycle when you have July/August before Fall semester starts. A much smaller percentage continue the position while in school. Most companies understand and the full-time offer is still there. Over 50% of Northeastern grads finish with a job offer from a previous co-op for context.
It wasnāt just length but also pay (50% off on the average pay is notable) and frequency, so just wanted to correct! Itās not meant to be any sort of attack on you, so apologies if the wording came across that way!
I have a question about the NUin program. If you choose the Boston location, can you walk from the Westin Hotel to campus in a reasonable amount of time?
