Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

I have 3 totally different students as well. S19 is journalism (after switching from Poli Sci) with a varsity sport weighing on the college decision, D22 is neuroscience/pre-med track, and D23 is visual art/physics. Funny though how the lists for D22 and D23 have overlapped somewhat even with different interests. Happy that my kids have found their passions but also looking forward to having a few years without the suspense of waiting for decisions!

Did anyone try to contact NE to see if the campus decision can be appealed?

Ok, I think I have a grasp on Oakland now for CS at least. The degree options are much more limited in Oakland. Iā€™d be curious if they have the same coop opportunities available or if there are certain ones for Oakland and others for Boston.

QUESTION!
Daughter was deferred as well. When she got the email, the letter opened immediately upon logging into the portal. She read it, chose RD (instead of ED2), but now we canā€™t see the letter anymore! We wanted to reread it to see what they say about submitting additional materials, grades, LOCI, etc. Anyone else having this issue? How do we see the letter again?

Yes I mentioned this earlier and several others (maybe all?) who were deferred ā€œlostā€ that letter. Really strange!

My sonā€™s says
STATUS
Decided

(Doesnā€™t even say deferred)

So what can we do???

I agree with your analogy, however, it is disingenuous for NEU to ask about location preferences on the CA and then completely disregard those preferences in placement without addressing the elephant in the room. The ā€œacceptanceā€ wording is completely misleading. ā€œCongratulations and welcome to Northeastern University!ā€ should be replaced with ā€œAfter careful consideration, we can only offer you admission to the Oakland campus which we understand you did not select as your preference.ā€ It would at least be honest and not lead to so much confusion.

I would have my son call but they are probably swamped with calls today so Iā€™m going to give it a few days to see if the portal changes and, if not, my son will email or call admissions in a few days.

@mwismer and @AmyIzzy

Does this help? Itā€™s a cut and paste from my Dā€™s deferral letter. We can still see it because she hasnā€™t decided what to do at this point.

If you choose to opt in for consideration at at later round, please log in to the Application Status Check 48 hours after submitting your form to determine if we need additional information to continue processing your application and to submit any additional materials for consideration. Please request that your midyear grades be sent to us by your high school.

We also welcome new information that will add to your application, such as updated standardized testing or a list of recent achievements since you submitted your application this fall. These may be uploaded through your Application Status Check after February 6.

For more information about this decision we encourage you to review our FAQs before contacting us at admissions@northeastern.edu.

We appreciate your continued interest in Northeastern University and look forward to further reviewing your application.

Yes, I can see the emotions around that. When my S21 got in through NUin, it wasnā€™t his first choice so we were surprised he got in. It was the Covid year and he had done nothing to demonstrate interest.

For S23, it was his first choice. He would have taken NUin, but heā€™s glad to start in Boston.

Same! Very aggravating.

Thank you-thatā€™s very helpful! So maybe there will be clear info 48 hours after they responded (indicating they wanted to be in the RD pool.)

Same. Probably just an unfortunate glitch. S23 is working on a ā€˜since Novemberā€™ highlight reel so to speak. Midterm grades were sent already 1/11 (all As with 4 APs including CalcAB and CompSci Principles) He was disappointed to be deferred but relieved to get to still be considered. The wait continuesā€¦

No merit amount is guaranteed anymore for NMF. (A decade ago it was full tuition, then $30k, now just a competitive scholarship. As the other commentor said, posts from the past couple of years show that folks were maybe getting $5k more than what merit they were originally given. Your scholarship will then change names to NMF rather than Deans scholarship. While the example posted earlier shows someone receiving the $28k merit originally, please note not all students are offered that amount to begin with.

Students who are admitted to Northeastern and are recognized as National Merit Finalists* or National Recognition Program Scholars** will receive a competitive merit-based award, and may also be eligible for financial aid.

Thank you from us as well! You are kind to share! We know we sent our midterm transcript 1/11 the day they became available. Guess heā€™ll read the FAQs and check in later this week to see if there was something specific that they request.

Very excited for you! The torture was worth it, my daughter was accepted to Boston too!

You can run the net price calculator for NU (and any school) and see what they predict your FA would be. NU would not exceed that (by much) either with merit and/or need. If you would not qualify for need based aid, I donā€™t think it shows potential merit however.
