Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

Did you daughter choose a major when applying? On my son’s enrollment form that was linked in his portal, it says computer science 2024 in Boston.

My son did not receive any merit aid either and we do not qualify for FA so it’s a big sticker price. The coop program, however, is I think really valuable in the long run so I guess he’ll just wait and see where else he gets accepted to.

Yes she applied for Neuroscience but on the decision letter it says Explorer program and undecided major

My Daughter took the tour last Friday and they said don’t submit if under a 33 act. My daughter has a 32 act. Equal to about 1430ish sat. She DID submit. Ironically the next day she was accepted to the Global Scholars program which I think sounds really good. So you never know on test scores. I always wonder not submitting a good test score like 32 or 1440 if admissions figures you did much worse. I don’t know. Just a thought.

Ahhh okay that is confusing

Where did she take the tour? Which campus?

She was in Boston for a Model UN conference so it worked out to tour NU during some of her free time. We had no idea acceptances would come while she was there in the city.

Can anyone shed some light on NUin locations and their accreditation towards pre-med prerequisites? Do the classes taken outside of the US qualify as premed prerequisites?

Medical school prerequisite courses taken outside the US and Canada are NOT recognized by medical schools. Until 2019 there was a NU In location in Montreal at McGill. Not sure if that will return to the site list.

That’s very true! YOLO, right? chances are slim anyway might as well try. Congrats to your daughter!

My D23 was EA deferred, and is interested in ED2, but we’re trying to get an idea of COA would be for her as that would be the determining factor. I did the online calculator but don’t know whether we should rely on that. My D emailed admissions, they responded but didn’t answer the question. She tried calling and you can’t get thru to anyone unless you have your NU ID, which disappeared from the portal once the deferral letter showed up. Many people here said ED1 students were able to get a financial pre-read. Anyone know if they are still doing that or how we can get in touch with a person to discuss?

Totally agree with you… a 32 ACT/1430 SAT is 97th percentile. That’s pretty amazing and I’d be proud to report it. There’s no use in trying to predict (or “chance”) how the Admissions offices at these schools are going to account for a standardized test score, so my philosophy for my son has been “it’s what you achieved, might as well send it in.”

I understand (at least I think I do) the decision to go test optional at so many schools, but the reality is, there’s no perfect way to objectively evaluate tens of thousands of applicants. The SAT/ACT is the best available - though far from perfect. I believe it is still true - I know it was 10 years ago - that a student’s SAT scores were strongly correlated for success during freshman year, so it’s something. I imagine AOs have some sort of actuarial table that break down classroom success with standardized test scores.

Just my $.02, and congrats!

Seeing this now on my daughter’s portal too.

That’s interesting, my daughter has a 33 and was deferred but I always figured we should submit because the assumption will be that it was much lower. Just don’t know what to do these days. My D applied Boston only to McKim so we knew it was a long shot anyway.

My son was also at a tour on Friday last week and the admissions officer was very clear (he repeated it twice!): “You should only submit test scores if they are at the 50th percentile or above. Only submit test scores if you think they will enhance your application. If they are at the 50th percentile or above, you should submit them. Only submit them if they enhance your application.” :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

ETA: My son applied RD and now I assume he won’t get in because he reported his test scores which I think were very good (1480), but are only just above the 25th percentile of reported scores (which is 1470). As a homeschooled student I felt like he needed the score to support that his GPA was legit. But if NEU is primarily concerned about boosting their average test score for rankings or prestige, they’ll reject him.

It seems clear that for the Boston campus - the only acceptances for which they publicly report data (test scores, acceptance %, yield), test scores below 33/1430 will not help your chances. Agree that those are excellent scores, but NU prob looking to keep that middle 50% very high. For Class of 2026, NU reported a middle 50 SAT range of 1470-1550.

I don’t know how to edit my previous comment, but for anyone else interested, financial pre-review is not available to deferred EA applicants considering ED2. Just not enough time before the ED2 decisions released. Oh well, RD it is!

Weird thing is my D applied Boston only for Mckim also. Seems like most that got into NUin and Global didn’t check that they wanted that.

Hi! I called and spoke to someone today and they don’t do it for ED2. She said the pre-read is only done in October.

My daughter had a similar message in her portal from several top schools last year. I don’t think it’s unusual at all. Some kids test again after they submit and want to add in their score. Many schools gave the option to add a score or switch to test optional.
