We chose Northeastern for its LDP because our son has pretty severe ADHD. We looked at the program and read everything about it and it sounded perfect. He was accepted to several colleges but none of the others boasted having such a program. Before paying the deposit, I called and spoke with the LDP personnel and was assured that so long as he met the criteria, he would be in the program. According to their own description of who was a good fit for the program, our son met all the criteria. We had the documentation, our doctor provided additional information to support the application. He had the interview. At no time were we given even the slightest hint that he might be rejected for the program. Yet, he was. Three weeks before the semester started with no explanation given. Now, we are half way through the semester and he is truly struggling and feeling overwhelmed without the additional support he had every reason to expect he would receive. Do not choose this school thinking it is a good fit for students with disabilities. It’s not.
It sounds like your son not being able to use the program is the issue, not the program itself. Did you try to appeal or get an explanation after the rejection? I would be persistent with this and make them respond with the why and/or appeal, especially given that your son is struggling now already in the semester.
Sorry to hear about this, and if you are already being persistent, ignore my repetitive advice. There can be some red tape with the administration often, so being persistent often is required to get to talk to the right people to solve an issue. I hope your son is able to get into the program as soon as possible.
This happened to my friend’s son at UA. He didn’t get into their SALT program for LD students first semester and almost flunked out. The parents raised hell, he got in 2nd semester and he’s back on track.
