Does a grandparent count when it comes to Legacy? My daughter’s grandfather donates a 4-year scholarship every year to a student in the College of Engineering (including tuition/room and board). Would they even look at this when considering her? Do they look up family members? Thank you!
Sorry-I posted twice ;(
@Collegemom1004 That’s the level of donation that one would think that Grandpa would be able to say to the school “Hey, my Grand daughter is applying…”, so that the application goes around the normal channel. He he done that yet?
Grandparents are not usually considered legacy. Northeastern does not consider legacy in the first place. Your daughter may qualify as a developmental admit
No, my daughter doesn’t even want him to know she’s applying. She doesn’t want him making a call.
@Collegemom1004 That’s a really strange family dynamic you have going on there. Granddaughter doesn’t want grandfather to know she’s applying to a school he gives hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to, and the grandfather hasn’t thought to ask either. I take it from the above that A)You are very wealthy and B)Not very tight knit as a family. I’m jealous of A) and feel bad for you for B).
^^ Or the daughter just wants to get in of her own accord and not seem like she is dependent on a leg up
@shawnspencer I would be more apt to believe that if the Mom wasn’t on here inquiring about using the Grandfather’s status at the university. Something in the story here is just a little bit off, don’t you think?
@edhdad…I don’t want to use his status, which is why we haven’t told him she is applying. She wants to do this on her own! No, we are not rich…my husband works in Local 4, and I left a great job to attend to my elderly mother. We would never expect him to pay. He expects people to earn everything…that’s how he grew up. This is why his scholarships also go to those students who have earned it. They do wonderful things for my kids. I paid for college myself as my father died my senior year of high school…took me 16 years to pay off. We can do it.
@Collegemom1004 I guess I was confused by the first sentence of your original post where you were asking if they would consider her legacy status in admissions. Your logic is very circular.
Northeastern doesn’t consider legacy at all.
@suzyQ7, agreed on general legacy but they do give consideration to relatives of large donors…
Legacy is not so helpful at any college unless you are a strong candidate to begin with.
@SuzyQ7 I got an email shortly after I applied with a link to upload extra information and ask questions because I am a legacy. I can’t remember exactly what it said, but I feel like they wouldn’t bother with that if legacy status didn’t matter at all. Unless you think they are kissing butt to get alumni donations.
