Hello everyone,
After going for quite the ride in my journey applying to schools, I’ve ended up with a few options, Northeastern and Georgia Tech being the most likely of the great schools available to me. I’m from NY, and most likely studying CS, but also leaning a bit on engineering, and a potential minor in psychology.
Here are the details and my upshot:
Northeastern - Honors program, ~half scholarship
- Pro: Co-op program - One of the best in the country, I’d probably end up doing 3 during my time there
- Pro: Location - Boston is close enough to where I live with lots of post grad options without moving too far
- Pro: Amenities - In most of the places I look is said to have at least slightly better food, dorms, etc
- Pro?: Honors program - Could be a take it or leave it as far as the classes etc, but having dibs on a few things is nice
- Con: Cost - 45k+ a year (!!!), but co-ops will help out a lot
Georgia Tech - Full OOS tuition
- Pro: Academics - Literally one of the best in the world in CS and engineering
- Pro: Reputation - Probably looks the best of all of my choices to grad schools and employers on a resume, higher in most of the rankings, etc
- Con?: Stress - Common word on the street is that it’s a bit of a pressure cooker, lots of grade deflation, but I’m not sure how true it all is, and it’s not an enormous deal to me
- Con: Cost - 50k+ a year (!!!), but co-ops will offset a bit
- Con: Flexibility - I’d have to go all in on CS or engineering more or less, which is usually fine, but in the scenarios I have second thoughts, I’ll be stuck
Fordham - “Full ride” for National Merit
- Pro: Cost - At least 30k a year less than any other option besides SUNY Binghamton
- Pro: Location - Close to home, which would be nice
- Con: Academics - Definitely a very good school, but no engineering to speak of
- Con: Co-op/internships - I’ll likely have to work a bit harder on my own to get experience on my resume
I also have SUNY Binghamton with full in state tuition and their honors program, and Stevens with their Pinnacle Scholars program and around the same tuition as NU and GT.
Am I missing something obvious? Anything else I should be considering?
Any help would be appreciated!
