So I'm in a dilemma... I want to study Finance/Business and so far i LOVELOVELOVE Northeastern. I got into both colleges' honors programs and have free tuition to Umass (will probably pay 9000 for room and board) and I have around 30000 in scholarship (without fafsa) to Northeastern. I want to know which one is the smarter choice, meaning which college will give me an edge in teh job market, give me invaluable experience and get me the most for my money? I know the general rule for college selection is go either ivy or state college and avoid 2nd tiers, but is this true with Northeastern???Helppppppp!

Do you have the Adams Scholarship (free tuition) for UMass? If, that is only worth $1,714. There is still another $10,000+ in fees to pay. So your net cost for UMass is about $20,000 unless you also got free fees. I expect that even with the $30,000 scholarship for Northeastern, your net cost there will be more. You should use the net cost calculator on their website to find out. You also need to find out the requirements for keeping that scholarship, since losing it will dramatically increase your costs, obviously. Northeastern (NEU) does use the coop system which can result in paid internships during the academic year, but can also mean taking classes in the summer or having to attend for a fifth year. However, coops can also lead to job offers, I understand. I’m not that familiar with NEU, so this is just based on what I’ve heard and read.

You need to determine your net cost for both these schools and find out what your parents are willing to pay. You need to weigh the two locations–college town versus city, and weigh the potential burden of having to meet the criteria to keep the NEU scholarship all 4 years. I don’t know much about the business programs at NEU or UMass, although I understand the Isenberg Business School at UMass is well respected and hard to get into (so, congratulations for that). Check the rankings for the two business schools. My son is an engineering major at UMass and likes it. We decided the cost difference for UMass vs. the private and out of state universities he got into wasn’t worth it for engineering. If the costs are similar and you prefer NEU, I’d say got for it. If NEU is significantly more than UMAss and cost is no object, go for NEU. If cost is a factor, you won’t go wrong in going to UMass.

$30,000 a year for Northeastern? That would make the cost about $21,362/year
UMass would be about $20,410/year including fees.

That makes the difference just about the same. Northeastern is ranked 27th in BusinessWeek for Business and UMass-Amherst is 64th.

It seems like since both schools are about the same cost, it’s your decision where to go. Good luck!
