Northwestern Clone?

I am currently a high school junior, and planning on majoring in theatre (non-musical). I fell in love with Northwestern (especially its theatre program) over the summer. It is exactly how I envision college and how I want to study theatre. I am planning on applying their ED. However, recently a classmate of mine, who is also planning on majoring in theatre, visited, and fell in love as well. She is also planning on applying ED. Northwestern only accepts 100 theatre majors, so I am skeptical that two girls from the same HS will get in ED.
I know her gpa is better than mine. So, I am on the hunt to find another school that is as amazing as Northwestern.

Criteria:
-STRONG theatre program
-close to big city, but not necessarily urban
-I am leaning towards a Liberal Arts school rather than conservatory, because I really value the lessons learned from having a well-rounded education
-diverse students
-intellectual students
-colliegete feel

any input would be greatly appreciated!

Look at the “What are the top BA in Acting programs?” listed at the top of this Theatre/Drama Majors category, it lists a lot of schools that might suit you.

But don’t assume that just because there’s another applicant from your school that only one will be admitted and even if that’s true, why can’t it be you? It’s more than just your GPA that gets you admitted!

I have a friend in the Northwestern program and I’m actually from the area so if you want me to direct you to her or have any questions for me, let me know.

What about the Guthrie program in Minneapolis? Urban area, generally same weather as Chicago (trust me, it’s not that different), conservatory-style program in a liberal arts setting, which means you’re required to take academic classes as well, and it’s one of the largest Big Ten schools (over 40,000 undergrad).

My D has similar interests (although not sure she prefers liberal arts to conservatory) and really fell in love with Northwestern also.

Other schools she will be looking at that might fit your bill include:

Tufts
Vassar
Brown
Muhlenberg
Skidmore

Those last two are not really close to a big city. Wesleyan is another one that is not close to a big city but otherwise might meet your needs.

Enjoy this time of exploring schools! I think its much less stressful than the next phase of applying and auditioning but its all exciting.

I’m a freshman theatre major (acting emphasis) at USC. I think it meets all the criteria that you listed above.

Thank you all very much for your input!
I am actually looking at all of the schools you mentioned, leftofpisa.
unfortunately, my parents aren’t letting me go to school in california.
ccoppi-thank you so much for the offer of your friend! i happen to be of the area as well, and have many friends who are currently theatre majors there, so i think i’m set ;)

I wanted to add one thing- what I tell my daughter- Fall in love with more than one school. Find a bunch of schools you love and know you would be happy attending. Even if you apply ED to Northwestern, know that you have great options if you are deferred.

Good luck!
