Has anyone heard from admissions officers the role that the music theatre supplement plays in admissions decisions? Since many theatre students have other interests such as straight acting, directing, and technical theatre, would not submitting the music theatre supplement hurt the chances of admissions for these students that are not interested in pursuing MT?
It’s always good to go straight to Admissions for a sure answer but, briefly, no. If you are not interested in MT and have no intention of auditioning for MT, don’t feel compelled to submit the supplement. (Look at it this way: If you’re not a diehard MT applicant, why would you submit anything less than your best?) You’re correct in assessing that NU theatre students (400 of them) have varied interests and passions, so there are many who do not pursue MT. There was an article recently in the Daily Northwestern (this week I think) where a Theatre major wrote that they chose NU bc they were interested in so many diff aspects of theatre.
Thank you so much for your reply. I agree with that and imagine they want to have a class with students with diverse interests within theatre and not 100 MT kids!
Here’s the opinion piece in the Daily Northwestern on Nov. 26, 2018: “Gutierrez: Why I’m a theatre major at a top-ten university”. Look it up; think you’ll find it interesting.
Thank you for sharing this article. It really reflects why I love NU.
