Northwestern on Wallstreet

How's its rep on Wallstreet? Would I be able to get a good job in NY or Boston right out of NU?

Let's put it this way- you can get a job on WS, but it'd probably be more convenient/easier if you looked in Chicago.

I think we tend to place more in Chicago, but if you want to work in NYC, it shouldn't be a problem if you're qualified.

Northwestern students would do better in Chicago then NYC, but you shouldn't be at a disadvantage wherever you go.

People seem to keep posting up threads on how their colleges do in Wall St. If it's a top-25 school, you aren't necessarily at a disadvantage. But if you're at HYPWharton, then you're at an advantage. It's that simple. Top firms prefer top students. Top students come from top schools. That doesn't mean that Northwestern isn't a place for top students (it certainly is) but Wall St. seems to have a strong preference for the elite. Harvard > Northwestern, at least in Wall St. terms - but does that mean anybody from Harvard is better than somebody from Northwestern? Heavens no! But you have to work hard and witty, well-spoken (and quantitative) brilliance will be definite requisites.

Question

Lets say there's 3 applicants; one comes from Wharton, one comes Harvard, and one comes from stern. They the 20% of their class with GPA 3.5 & higher. Now which one of the 3 would Wall street if they had to choose?

I suppose in a situation like that it would come down to the interview, because stat-wise they are all coming from great schools and have great grades.

Yeah, there are so many people who think getting a job is akin to applying to elite universities all over again. It's not. Once you are in the interviews, it doesn't matter what school you went to or what you did in your spare time or what your "stats" were; all that matters is your performance and the impression you make on the people interviewing you.

The person who comes across best in the interview, of course.

Techy233-
You should add Dartmouth, Stanford, and Duke to your HYPWharton, for each do at least as well as Yale in some areas of ib & mc.

Uh oh. Now every school that didn't get mentioned is going to pipe up and say why they should also belong on that list.

If Yale's on that list, a lot of other schools deserve to be on as well.
