I think the two schools are going to be pretty similar in regards to all of your criteria. Any college that isn't totally nuts is going to have a good social scene and no weird rules. Neither of these schools are notorious- as far as I know- for grade inflation, and if you're pre-med, some of your classes could get pretty competitive. As far as financial aid goes, I didn't apply for any, but I would imagine they're both pretty similar. WashU does offer merit aid, but I think you have to be pretty out of control to get some. As far as the town envirnonmet goes, WashU is closer to St. Louis than Northwestern is to Chicago, but Chicago royally kicks the ass of St. Louis, and its not too hard to get downtown from Evanston- it is the first Northern suburb, and there is a free shuttle that runs from campus to the Law/Medical schools downtown, which is about a 25 minute ride.

Other things to consider:
-I'm not entirely certain about med school admissions specifically, but Northwestern is the more 'prestigious' of the two schools. Most people consider Wash U to be overrated because of the gimmicks they use to game the US News rankings. This can hurt you because Wash U selectively admits their student body to the point where if you're highly qualified and didn't apply ED, there will be a lot of suspicion surrounding your application. I didn't apply, but I've heard of a lot of people who used Wash U as a 'safety' of sorts, and ended up getting waitlisted. Show a lot of interest if you apply RD, otherwise you could be screwed.
- If you like sports, Northwestern is a Big Ten school, and nobody goes to the games at WashU.
- Depending on where you're from, Northwestern could have a pretty long winter. I'm from Minnesota, so I'll just laugh at you while you're cold. If you're from the midwest or somewhere else with a real winter, you'll be fine.

Northwestern has an HPME program, but its hard as balls to get into. It basically means you're already accepted to Northwestern Medical School, so you don't have to go through all the stressful admissions ******** twice. That would be damn nice, I wish there were more programs like that for law school.

Anyway, both schools are totally great. If you're looking for schools in the midwest only, I would suggest looking at a few more top schools:

LAC's:
Carleton- the best in the nation after Amherst, Williams, and Swat
Macalester- in St. Paul, great international feel

Safeties:
Michigan (could be a match depeding on your stats)
Wisconsin- if you like to party, this is the place for you. It was my safety, and I even considered going there, but I was pretty sure I'm a little too out of control at this point in my life to be able to buckle down. I'll be there for Halloween and NU-Wisconsin football and basketball, because I have about 40 friens going there.

Wow this is my longest post ever. Hope it was helpful- good luck!
