Northwestern vs. Syracuse

Which one should I attend?

Double Major: Medill School of Journalism and Psychology (Arts and Science) at Northwestern

OR

Dual Program: Newhouse School of Communications and Whitman School of Management at Syracuse? (Minor in psych)

Please give me information about the schools along with personal experiences, pros and cons...etc

Thanks!

Yikes. Always tough deciding between arguably the top two journalism schools in the country. What are your interests? Are you looking for a big social/greek scene? How much do you care about sports? Can you handle snow?

Northwestern

vociferous - can you tell me more about northwestern?

Well, what would you like to know?

What I can tell you is that given your major, I think the closer proximity to a large city helps ALOT in terms of connections and internships. NU is a MAFIA when it comes to opportunities like these and they have grads from L.A. to NYC. Syracuse is a fine program, but I think Northwestern offers more in way of the kinds of contacts you need.

Now as a campus, NU can be a little elitist. Evanston is a wealthy suburb and can be a bubble if you don’t take advantage of seeing Chicago. Also, frat parties and frat life kinda dominates, BUT its not as obnoxious as in some places, it is a bit elitist though in terms of kids having money and not being shy about driving daddy’s Beamer to campus.

Of course, the entire campus is not like that and like with ANY campus you can find your own niche. And if you fit in with that crowd, then you will be fine :-)

It is also a nice balance between a Big 10 school and strongly academic institution. Now these aren’t eclectic philosophical U of Chicago kids, BUT they are driven and work hard. Many are on the pre-professional school track in one regard or the other.

Hmm the campus is nice, right on the beach (when it isn’t frozen haha) and very nice in the fall (until it gets really cold) Spring and Summer in Chicago is wonderful. The facilities on campus are top notch and reflective of their substantial endowment. And that is the other thing, NU is flush with resources (cash) which will help them weather any uncertainty in terms of the economy more than most other places (Syracuse included)

Anything else?

^^^

I understand your perspective, but Syracuse has an abundance of alumni contacts pretty much everywhere and has a very generous endowment. I find it hard to believe that Northwestern is much superior to SU in either of those categories. In fact, I would even argue that Syracuse’s alumni base is superior to that of Northwestern.

Also, I’m willing to help you out collegedecisions, but it would really help if you gave me some sort of guidance as to what type of information you are looking for.

Syracuse is a fine institution. But Northwestern’s endowment is 7 times that of Syracuse (7 billion to 1 billion)
