Northwestern vs. USC Honors Program (ENGR.)

I don't know which to pick. I visited USC, and my expectations were exceeded. I also like how I have the ability to go into the WVT Honors program..

So, which would you say is best for engineering? I am undecided but will probably do electrical or computer science or even mechanical (I truly have no idea lol).

Someone please??

I would definitely recommend Northwestern over USC. Northwestern has an awesome location (Evanston) close to downtown Chicago and the school has one of the highest job placement rates for graduating students. Overall, NU has a good atmosphere that isn’t too competitive and allows to do what you want.

Sorry I am not going to be much help. However, I am turning down USC honors for Northwestern. I am biased because I live way too close to USC. Have you been to USC and gone on their tours? To be blunt, everything about the school seems mediocre in comparison to NU. That might be a bit harsh, but I think that it is fair to read a lot into presentations and tours. I’ve been on a tour of the engineering facilities at USC. The professors seem nice and everything but the quality does not seem comparable. The student bodies are also very different. It is important for me to be an environment where other people are working hard so that I will be motivated.

There is obviously a big difference in price. That is the only thing that might make me consider usc over nu.

Really? I liked USC when I went there, but I haven’t been to Northwestern yet.

I hear it is beautiful, so I’ll just have to find out for myself.
I just don’t like wind or the cold…haha…

The cold’s not that big of a deal really and I’m from CA. You’re indoors most of the time anyway, so as long as you have one really warm jacket, you’ll be fine :)

Hi!

I am a civil/ environmental engineering student in the honors program at USC and I absolutely love it (I’m biased of course). I have never visited Northwestern and I am sure they have a lot to offer also but I’m just going to tell you why I chose USC.

As a Pennsylvania native, I applied to mostly east coast schools (USC was the only school west of Penn State that I applied to). I didn’t really think I would like USC because I knew nothing about it, but I visited and as corny as it sounds fell absolutely in love with it. I just felt like I fit and after that I compared all the other schools I visited to USC.

Once I got here I realized how much USC and the Viterbi school has to offer. I have never once felt like a number and I love the atmosphere within the viterbi school and USC as a whole. Everyone here bleeds cardinal and gold and there are a lot of great resources (which I am sure you heard about when you came to visit).

In the end I say follow your gut- you’ll know which school is right for you and in the end, college is what you make of it- you can be happy anywhere.

Good luck!

Oh my gosh. I am so sorry. I should have done my research. I assumed that you were talking about the University of South Carolina. I really hope that my post has not done any damage.

^LOL. Haha.
Do you enjoy experimenting a lot and doing lots of hands-on stuff? I don’t know whether Northwestern does a lot of hands-on activities, but I believe USC’s engineering students do so. The area around USC, to be honest, is not the very best. However, if you feel that your belongs to USC right now, then just go for it.

I think Northwestern does have a lot to offer in terms of opportunities and such, though. Plus, if you want a taste of a liberal arts college but not at a LAC, NU would be a match.

I’m also from CA, so I, too, worry about enduring the cold, but I don’t think the winters will be as bad as we imagine. But, I will miss two things: the great shopping malls and beautiful, sunny spring weather.

USC and Northwestern are both great schools but there’s a reason I decided not to apply to USC (when everything was basically done). I don’t know if upon graduation, the school can offer me much, and I felt that I could not really grow (no, not physically) at USC as well. I say… go with your heart!

Best of luck.
