Hi, I am deciding between WUSTL and NU for Ed but cannot choose. I want to study math, economics and or finance, which has the better programs and if you would like to give any other comments about the school that would be great.

I ended up choosing between the two. They’re pretty similar in terms of academics/types of students admitted, so the big difference is going to be the feel.

Northwestern is slightly bigger, and also in the Big 10, which definitely affects the social atmosphere, though less than say, Michigan. The campus is bigger, and is right off Lake Michigan, which is pretty cool. Its also more integrated into Evanston than Wash U is into U City, which can be a plus or minus, since there have been some conflicts recently.

Wash U is a couple thousand students smaller, and the campus definitely feels more closed, which can be good or bad. Its about the same distance to St. Louis as NW is to Chicago, and you get unlimited use of the light rail. Comparing to my friends at Northwestern, I feel pretty comfortable saying that the quality of the dorms and food is much better at Wash U.

Assuming that you’re competitive at both, and otherwise can’t decide, I would recommend applying ED to Wash U, since that shows a very strong interest, which is very important to their admissions. Of course, if one stands out to you much more after a visit, definitely go with your gut.

Absolutely Northwestern. Finance and Consulting recruiting has not caught up with WashU’s selectivity rise, the number of top firms (strategy consulting + top 5 banks) recruiting on campus pales to Northwestern. NU is a feeder, WashU isn’t.

Both schools are top 15 in the nation. So one being higher then the other (northwestern is higher then WashU) is NEGLIGIBLE. There is almost no difference in quality of education you will receive. However, in my personal view, I like large Universities.

So with bias, Northwestern University because it has a large university type feel to it.
