Are these two even comparable at the undergraduate level? Is Wharton far more difficult to get admitted to ED than Northwestern?

Yep, you’ve got it

Wharton is way more difficult to get into. Northwestern ED (or at least it did for the class of 2011) takes 50% of applicants, which is very high. That being said, you can accomplish all the same things coming from Northwestern, going to Wharton just makes it easier.

BK is on the money, you can definitely accomplish whatever you want if you set your mind to it (cliche, o well).

I won’t go so far as to say that you can accomplish the same stuff as coming out of Wharton if you go anywhere, but reasonably, if you’re thinking about these two schools, you’re good to go.

So if I were top 25% of my class at Northwestern, I could go into IB?

From what I’ve heard, they don’t really look at class rank but more specifically at course load and even more specifically at the GPA you attain. I think the cut-off for a bunch of banks is around 3.3-3.5 with a challenging and purposeful course load.

The GPA (and the school you go to) is just to get the nod for an interview. After that point, its the person who gets the job, not the school.

No, top 25% at NW will not get you into IB, at least not a top tier bulge bracket (unless you network extremely well). Top 25% at Wharton won’t get you in either, esp. in this market.

GPA is important, but everyone who applies has a good to great GPA anyway, so it doesn’t matter so much once you get above a certain level.

An impressive resume with leadership activities and interesting experiences comes before everything else IMO. After that, networking. It’s all about knowing the right people who will advocate for you to get you that initial interview.

Top 25% at Wharton is certainly going to put you in the running for BB IB, or at least at that point it isn’t your grades are going to be at a high enough level that it’s not going to be what keeps you out. I don’t know to what extent grade inflation has grown at Northwestern but assuming that top 25% there is ~ 3.6 GPA, that’s not going to keep you out either.

In my experience, on campus interviews don’t have much to do with networking.

As long as you have an GPA of 3.3 or higher with good networking & some job experience you’ll do fine. The question to you should be where you want to do IB? If its Chicago then go to Northwestern if its NYC then go Wharton.
