Hi everybody,
I recently got into both William and Mary and Northwestern. They are both very unique and have a lot of different things to offer. I am interested in sports and like the idea of Big Ten sports at NU, but I love history and am interested in studying international relations (which is strong at W&M). Any suggestions?

Two great options. Can’t go wrong no matter which one you pick. We’d just encourage you to visit both campuses and decide which one feels the best given the obvious differences (location, public vs private, size of school, etc.). While W&M is not a Big 10 school the sports here are great. Tribal Fever, a student-run booster club, helps get students psyched for and attending games. And, games are free to students which is a huge perk.

Certainly our location makes us an awesome place for history and our 318 years of history lends a unique je ne sais quois to the W&M experience (pretty cool to attend the second oldest college in the U.S. right?). Our proximity to DC is also great for students interested in IR. We have a lot of guest speakers who visit campus and classes make use of DC (we have an office there). We also have a semester program in DC each semester open only to W&M students.

Good luck with your choice.

while Northwestern might have big 10 sports, it can only be fun for so long to watch them lose game after game after game… just sayin =P

W&M took down 2 ACC basketball programs last year (09-10), and 1 ACC football team (in 2009).

As Admissions said, you can attend the sports for free at W&M, which is not the case at some of the bigger schools (not sure about northwestern specifically).

The IR program at W&M is top notch.

The schools are in very different locations. Have you visited both?

^NU has a pretty good soccer team.

NU was in Jan bowl games the past two seasons. NU was also the Big Ten champ three times in the last 15years.

NU w. tennis was ranked #1 during the season in 08-09 and 09-10. NU’s w. lax is considered the “evil empire”.

Not a good January bowl though…

All Jan bowls are pretty decent. You mean you only consider Rose Bowl as good? For someone that don’t seem to watch any football (since you didn’t know NU actually has been having winning records in the Big Ten conference, intead of “losing game after game after game”) and went to a school in a minor conference, your standard is strangely high.

January bowls used to be pretty decent. Northwestern finished last year 7-6. Are you claiming that teams that go 7-5 get to go to good bowl games now?

You are a funny guy with inconsistent standard and expectation:

:D

the W&M athletic budget is a fraction of those ACC schools it beat.

I’m saying that W&M is capable of beating these “big time” schools, so the gap on the field/court is not as big as some would have you believe.

W&M’s athletics are truly special where the idea of the student athlete is realized rather than just paid lip service too. W&M is a smaller school compared to most DI schools but we are incredibly competitive and have many championship-caliber teams and at times, we’ve made runs for major accolades in the “bigger sports” such as basketball and football.
