Accepted, and surprised. My SAT was only 1950 and my GPA only 3.65.

^ I believe providing all the data requested would be far more illuminating for thread readers than posting those two stats.

@Artsinfo: I was accepted with a low SAT score too!

2050 SAT
3.8 GPA

Will post everything else after I get the other decisions.

^ wow. I can’t believe they didn’t accept you. I read your thread earlier and it made me really nervous.

I’m sure you will be accepted at a fantastic school anyway. Don’t lose hope!

Waitlisted (Weinberg.)

Essays: good but not great
Teacher Recommendation: probably pretty good-didn’t see
Counselor Rec: probably very good
Additional Rec: didn’t submit
Interview: yes with d bag alum that didn’t make NU seem very great
Applied for Financial Aid?: yes but won’t get
Intended Major: Bio or Chemistry
State: CA
Country
School Type: private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: upper middle
Hooks none

Strengths: GPA, course load, class rank
Weaknesses: AP scores for history, submitted ap on last day?
Why you think you were waitlisted: number of applicants/spots available. Interviewed with a putz that talked about how he was a D student at NU-awkward…Worst interview of schools I interviewed with
General Comments: Good Luck!!
Rejected EA Stanford, accepted: WashU, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara; more coming back next week…

^ The midpoint SAT Score (of the 25% - 75% range) of enrolled freshman at Northwestern is relatively high (here it is compared to some other elites):

(2009-2010)
Northwestern University 2158
Stanford University 2150
Dartmouth College 2150
University of Pennsylvania 2150
Duke University 2150
Vanderbilt University 2143
Brown University 2128
Cornell University 2083

But it would not be considered an anomoly to score below these targets. Quite the contrary, considering in the neighborhood of half of the applicants enrolled score at or below these midpont scores. So no need to be shocked at a less than perfect SAT, considering the holistic approach used for admissions at the very selective schools.

To: JustAnotherTry…
You Rock, Man! Hang in there! Good things to come for you-you’re an awesome candidate!!!

^ You are showing an astounding maturity. Your rejection is mind-boggling. Cream rises to the top, however, and I know you will do well wherever you land. Peace and blessings to you (and I vote for ice cream, too!)

We’re in the same boat. I’m worried about how I will look now if I got rejected by Northwestern, to the Ivies. crossing my fingers

Reflection
Strengths: Extracurriculars
Weaknesses: To be honest, I didn’t know much about Northwestern. I just applied to have more ‘choices’
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Essay wasn’t strong enough?
Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted to UCLA, UCBerkeley, UCSD, and UCDavis; rejected only to Northwestern
General Comments: N/a

To Kdog :

No it isn’t. It is very need-aware for international students. They keep pointing this out on the ug-financialaid web page.

Stats have to be looked at with an eye toward gender, geography and URM status. Most people are aware that having URM status will boost your acceptance odds. By the same token, being female will double your acceptance odds at MIT (as they try to gender-balance their incoming class), but lower it by 10% at Northwestern (which gets more female than male applicants). So for a female with math and science strengths, it’s close to a toss-up between Northwestern and MIT.

Elite schools also tend to slightly favor students in their own backyard, graduating from schools that they are familiar with. So the same student with the same stats may get into Northwestern and not into Rice if he lives in Illinois, yet get into Rice and not into NW if he lives in Texas.

Four or five years ago, a top applicant would have gotten into both choices easily, but today the competition at the top is so fierce that factors beyond the student’s control are increasingly becoming a factor in college admissions: Remember, the college admins are trying to build a class and you students are merely the individual Lego pieces!
