“First, what the hell are Asian symbols? Do you mean characters? If you are not Asian, and you’re calling the characters that some Asian languages use “symbols,” then I’ll just take you as ignorant. But if you are Asian, and consider characters to be symbols, then I have a word for you too.”

sym·bol [sim-buhl]
noun
1.
something used for or regarded as representing something else; a material object representing something, often something immaterial; emblem, token, or sign.
2.
a letter, figure, or other character or mark or a combination of letters or the like used to designate something: the algebraic symbol x; the chemical symbol Au.
3.
a word, phrase, image, or the like having a complex of associated meanings and perceived as having inherent value separable from that which is symbolized, as being part of that which is symbolized, and as performing its normal function of standing for or representing that which is symbolized: usually conceived as deriving its meaning chiefly from the structure in which it appears, and generally distinguished from a sign.

All written languages are composed of symbols and asian languages are no different. If you’re not a linguist and are saying asian characters are not symbols, then I’ll just take you as ignorant. But if you are a linguist and consider characters to not be symbols, then I have a word for you too.

But, all Chinese people are Asians.

You don’t say?

Just wanted to mention that the census bureau considers arabs to be white, not asian

Sent from my SCH-I510 using CC

well, the census bureau is rubbish -_- it’s a bit eurocentric to call arabs white

What about the people from the Philippines?? The Philippine Islands are technically part of Asia

“it’s a bit eurocentric to call arabs white”
How is that to do with eurocentricity?

And anyway, a lot of the world is based around Europe, because of the power and influence it held when these places were discovered by the west originally. That’s why world maps always place the UK in the centre

The center of the world map on my wall is somewhere around Tunisia.

okayyy, that seems really weird. Doesn’t it have time lines, and if so then surely Greenwich must be in the centre. Which sorts of backs up my previous point about things being based around Europe, time zones in particular

I’ve already got tartio signed up for my course in linguistics, and dblazer enrolled in my demographics course. I’m now thinking about starting an English Comprehension 101 course for you.

I did not say that “asian characters are not symbols.” I was pointing out that the more specific and accepted name is “characters.”

I should also enroll you in my course for linguistics: not all Asian languages are character based.

It doesn’t show below 60 degrees south, and anyway, the intersection of the Equator and PM is off the coast of Africa.

i also hate it when non-asians go are you chinese? korean? japanese? filipino? and after you respond, they go “aren’t they all the same thing?” OMG that ****es me off so much. non-asians think we all look the same but as a korean myself, I can clearly distinguish the difference between chinese, japanese, and korean people

^ idk why that word even got blocked…but whateverr

"I did not say that ‘asian characters are not symbols.’ I was pointing out that the more specific and accepted name is ‘characters.’ "

Funny. When you said, “What the hell are Asian symbols? Do you mean characters?” It sure as hell sounded like you were implying that asian symbols do not exist, when in fact every asian language uses asian symbols. As he was 100% correct in saying asian symbols, I simply do not understand why you would call him ignorant, unless you believed he was wrong.

“not all Asian languages are character based.”

Firstly, you might want to sign yourself up for that english comprehension class of yours. Nowhere did I say nor imply that all asian languages are character based. I simply said “asian characters” referring to characters from asia. Just as when I say “asian communist states” I am not saying or implying that all nations in asia are communist, but instead I am referring to those countries in asia which are.

Secondly, all asian languages which have a written form (which is a minuscule assumption to make in the context of this conversation), are composed of characters, seeing as how a character is defined as “a graphic symbol (as a hieroglyph or alphabet letter) used in writing or printing.”

Not all black people are hatian. Sorry, nothing to do with chinese, japanese, korean, indian, etc. but it bothers me that people always think I’m hatian because I’m black. No, I’m not Hatian, I’m Cameroonian…

Uh, I’m black but wt h is a Cameroonian???
