I am part of Key Club and NHS and unfortunately, could not become president of any club. However, i did become treasurer of Key Club and Vice President of NHS if that means anything. I am still active in these two clubs and i have racked over 200 hours of volunteering with them.

Basically what i'm asking is how much does this hurt me when i try to apply to top colleges (top 20). I have other strong extra curriculars but i really feel this will drastically hinder my application. O and i go to school to an average high school but this year there are about 3-4 people that could go to top schools.

It shouldn’t hurt you. Colleges care more about how your contributed to these clubs and to the greater community more than the title of the position you hold. I was not president of any club and I was accepted to better colleges than the presidents of many clubs at my school. Just show your dedication and contribution to these clubs/organizations and I think it won’t hurt you. After all, I believe that many colleges recognize that becoming president of a club or even the student body is more of a popularity contest than anything. They shouldn’t (and won’t) penalize you!

President of most high school clubs does not impress at top colleges. A passionate EC taken beyond the HS does.

Getting a rank is all popularity here. No one votes for the quiet dude in the corner…=D

^Seriously. Make an impact though. Being a lazy member is worthless.
