Not doing as well as I hoped?

Hey CC, I'm currently a new sophomore in my first semester of boarding school at Loomis. In terms of sports and social wise, I'm fitting in pretty well and I've settled down. However I'm not doing as well in academics as I expected to.

Currently I have a B+ average in all honors classes, which is much lower than my GPA at my former school (4.0 UW). I'm finding it a lot harder to get A's here, despite putting in just as much effort as I did in my previous school. I'm also have a lot more commitments now since I'm in on a team sport. Do you think this is just a problem with settling down and if any one has similar experiences could they relate them to me?

Remember you are still adjusting and don’t knock B+'s in honors classes your first semester at BS. If you want to know how to improve your grades, talk with your teachers and advisor. Your work may be very good, but your instructors will be expecting a lot of you…and a A really does mean excellence at BS.

The top bs are a lot more rigorous than many public schools and it can be almost impossible to get an A. Some schools pride themselves on it, I think. Don’t worry, the colleges are well aware and a B+ in an honors course will carry as much weight as your public school A’s. (But keep working for those A’s anyway!)

From what I have heard, honors classes at Loomis Chaffee are really hard. I’m sure that your grades will go up as soon as you get more comfortable with the work load and expectations!

A big adjustment in entering a top BS is realising that you will be surrounded by hundreds of equally if not more impressive peers, teachers that push you to your limits, and finally realising that you are not the superstar that you once were at public school. You’re not gonna get A’s straight away and so easily. This adjustment can be hard getting use to but most do after a while.
