Not exactly answering the prompt....

So I just finished rewriting my Stanford roommate essay AGAIN (fifth time), but I'm not sure about if it directly answers the prompt

The prompt is: "Virtually all of Stanford’s undergraduates live on campus. What would you want your future roommate to know about you? Tell us something about you that will help your roommate—and us—know you better."

So I've almost always heard this as the "letter" to the roommate essay, but I did mine as a story about my first day at college and meeting my roommate. I wouldn't write a letter about that?!? Do they care about whether you specifically answer the prompt, or do you think this could be okay? Thanks so much!
